Quick background: I'm looking to sell or trade my '02 X-Cab PreRunner (141k, rebuilt title) to find a 4x4. I listed it on craigslist, and had a guy contact me about a trade for this '98 4Runner with 150k on the clock. Looks to be in pretty good shape from the pics (said the seat covers are just for protection, the seats are in good shape), but I haven't seen it in person yet, let alone gotten behind the wheel (plan to this weekend). I'm wanting to get some opinions/input on what some of you guys would do. I've never had a rebuilt title vehicle, so I'm not really sure how to handle this. Thanks in advance guys!

Depends on how it looks underneath, I'd check the fluids and look at the stuff under the truck. Sounds like a close deal as long as the 4 runner is in sound shape. Might want to get a grand or so also... Check the blue books. I've always wanted a 4 runner, it'd be like a jeep but not shitty

It does blue book for about 1k less than my truck (considering the title), but actual market value they go for more than blue book. I guess most Toyota 4x4's do that! I'm going to look it over pretty thorough this weekend and see what I come up with.

And yes, I would rather end up in a Toyota, but if a Jeep is what I get, I'd be okay with it.

If the 4 Runner is clean, I'd go for it. It doesn't have a salvage title, it's a 4x4 and 4Runners flex better than our tacomas. It could be a sweet wheeling rig!

EDIT: Wait, is your rig the rebuild or the 4Runner?

Hmm. Didn't notice your truck was a salvage title... That takes some value off of it for sure, at least in my state. It costs more to insure salvage vehicles. Dunno about where you are, I'd still see if he wants to give you something and a trade

Mine is the rebuild. Yet another reason I'd like to sell/trade. But mostly because it's 2WD.

I only have liability on it and it's right under 500 bucks a year! Not too shabby!

If someone came along with a 4runner and wanted to trade me for my truck I would being that the 4runner was between 10-current

Those 2010+'s are freakin sweet! They look a little big, but they look bad ass lifted. I hear they perform pretty damn well too.

I'm hoping it's just some tube steps that were made for some other vehicle. If it has a body lift I'm walking away with no consideration at all.

If its clean, yes, good trade. But I dont think he will go for it.

Dont worry about body lifts, easy to remove and 1" is generally ok.

It doesn't look like it has a body lift the pic of the motor the motor doesn't look sunk down in like it would with a body lift.

Why wouldn't he go for it? He's the one who offered it.

Also considering this '04 Grand Cherokee Overland. 100k miles for $9,993.

    Or this 2002 4Runner with 175k miles for $10,000

Oh, then take it. His lose unless there is something he's not telling. Why the rebuild title?

there isn't abody lift on it. Ist just the steps i bet.

Check the frame and all the undercarriage big time. Check for play in the drive shaft and the CV boots aren't ripped.

Other then that if it seems to drive good and all..id totally do it.

For 4WD I'd do it. Prerunners aren't as awesome unless you go full LT. I'd trade mine for a 3rd gen 4Runner 4x4 any day

He did say that the check engine light comes on sometimes, but it's due to a sensor going bad. When I drive it I'm going to run it by AutoZone and have them read the codes.

From what I can tell on the CarFax, it was wrecked by whoever owned it in Tennessee. Some guy from Missouri bought it, rebuilt it and had it re-titled. Then my mom's boyfriend came along and bought it, and I bought it from him.

Thanks for the info. I will absolutely take the advice.

I completely agree. Being where I live (Arkansas), I don't have much need for a PreRunner. I miss my 4 wheel drive. :(

CHECK the radiator fluid to make sure it doesn't look like strawberry milkshake. The 4runners has transmission/coolant cross contamination at high mileage. He might be trying to pass a dying vehicle on you.

Does he know you have a rebuilt title?

If everything checks out, I'd do it. Even if a radiator swap should be done soon to make sure the stock one doesn't shit the bed on you.

Sounds like a solid trade to me as long as everything checks out mechanically. That was a great year for the runners love that body style with the hood scoop!

We had a 2012 runner that I loved but my wife traded it for for a sequoia. I almost told her to trade my truck instead!
