Yeah. I understand people have different preferences. Most want double cabs hence the much high sales numbers and much higher resale value. But....if you don't need it, I get it. I had a 92 toyota reg cab and a 95.5 reg cab tacoma. I've been there. Even back then when it was just my gf, dog and I, I still wanted more room.

The SR only exists as a pinch-hit to get someone behind the wheel of a new Tacoma or if Ecolab or Terminix calls and needs 50 pickups.

Here's how it plays out: Connor and his girlfriend Ashley are having Tacoma dreams one night after seeing a fully decked out TRD Off-road at the Whole Foods. Connor has never worked an honest hard day in his life beyond pouring coffee and cutting the crusts off sandwiches at the Red Star coffee shop. You see crusts are for poor people. His girlfriend Ashley is your typical hipster chick, she just hasn't outgrown Connor's lack of drive and ambition as he's only 26, and is still finding his place in this world. Ashley works at a no kill animal shelter and despite how hot she looks in them skinny jeans she's typically covered in cat hair. She looks like Lisa Loeb in her video "Stay" It's now Saturday morning and they've both spent last night tossing and turning, but not in the throws of passion, but the excitement of getting a new Tacoma and that goat's milk from the farmer's market has gave them both liquid shits again. It's how Ashley stays so thin, but she thinks it's not the milk, it's because she has undiagnosed irritable bowel syndrome. They've decided to do this so the 240 Volvo is cleaned out and they're off to Toyota where they meet with Sara the sales consultant. The credit reports are run and the trade in valued. There's not a snowballs chance in hell they can afford a TRD off-road so Sara shows them the SR. There's something about the steel wheels that appeal to Connor, maybe it's because they look so plebeian, so the numbers are crunched and an SR it will be. In typical Sara fashion she says don't worry drive it for a year or two and you can trade it for a Pro. They both gleefully leave the dealer in a new SR in super white and the only added option is mud flaps. At this time they have just enough money left over for a meal at Panera Bread. There's only 60 payments left on that SR. In about 8 months Ashley will leave Connor, because she's found a guy named Chad Thundercock that drives a Limited. She's hoping to have her life story play out like that movie Shop Girl with Steve Martin that college degree from Evergreen isn't going to pay itself off. In the mean time Connor can't make the payments on the SR anymore and it gets repoed.

My 4 cylinder regular cab is completely satisfactory if driven correctly. If you always upshift at 3000 rpm you won't be happy. The redline is 5500 rpm.
Recently I drove up Blewett Pass in Washington, I was in 3rd gear at 4500 rpm to maintain 60mph, had to slow to 40mph for some curve. Speed picked right up again after the curve. That's not going to hurt the engine, I only do it for mountain passes or merging on the freeway. I usually shift about 3000rpm on the level. The engines rated horsepower is produced around 5000 rpm.
I'm completely satisfied with my 4 cylinder.

Very funny, well written post ! I am sure that versions of the scenario you depicted play out frequently. But, rest assured, many of us buy the SR because it is what we want.

I bought an SR because I didn't want a bigger double cab and couldn't find an access cab, it was what I wanted. I wanted a 4 cyl engine because it's easier to work on. The 2nd generation v6 has issues with the manual transmission (1st gear too high) and the clutch. The access cab is longer than the regular cab, same length as a double cab with 4' bed.
    I'm happy with it.

Credit for an amazing story. But besides a locker, trd trims are for people who don’t know better, with no tools :D

Oh and lol... no one named chad thundercock drives a limited. I know a guy with a limited, however, and his name is Bryant Softsmallhands. Were you talking about him?

I’m 20, and occasionally, even though I have my own Tacoma, I’ll go with my dad and get stuck in the back of his double cab. I have no complaints about space and I’m 5’11.. I’d rather drive my truck though. Sometimes it’s just more convenient to go with him.

Jokes on you. The SR doesn't accept mud flaps.

3rd gen SR is not compatible with factory mud flaps. Therefore not an option.

We'll then, it's Saturday so I better take my boy to soccer and then hit the mall...oh wait, I can't. He doesn't play soccer and we don't have malls in the mountains.
