It can absolutely get up a mountain loaded. Obviously won't be as quick as the 6 doing it but it'll get it done at a reasonable speed.

Many are just not being fair. The 2.7 is good for what it is. Trucks with the 2.7 are rated appropriately and get the THEIR job done.

A Tacoma with the 2.7 will move right along if you "wind it up" - get those RPM's up there and she will go pretty good. The 2.7 pairs nicely with the 5sp MT. Sometimes to really get her moving it pays to down shift TWO gears and goose her.

I drive fairly conservatively and achieve very respectable average MPG's. However, when I want/need my 2.7 Tacoma to "giddy up" MPG's are not a consideration while I go get the horsepower that is truly there at the higher RPM's.

If i was buying a 3rd gen, I'd go with the 6. I was looking for a 2nd gen, so wanted anything BUT the 4 point slow engine. The 3.5 is modern tech. The 4.0 is m'eh. The 2.7 looks good compared to the 4.0, but not the 3.5.
That, and now that the only way to get a manual tranny is with the 3.5, it's a no brainer.

I had the engine balanced to 0.1 gram statically and dynamically and it had a longer duration cam. The trick cam is what made it produce power over 6000 rpm. I didn't run it continuously at 8000 rpm, just when I was accelerating. 100 mph was 4800 rpm in 5th gear.

I would not get a 2.7 with the auto trans. I would not get any vehicle with an auto trans.

Me neither, but manual transmission options for any vehicle are getting almost as rare as hand crank windows.

I emailed Toyota last week about bringing back the 2.7 5MT. No response yet.

Should've asked for hand crank windows while you were at it:pI think the 2.7 is getting pretty long in the tooth and bogged down as vehicle weights rise to meet safety standards. They should just stick the 6 spd M in there. Again, Chevy is really upping the ante with their 200hp 2.5 liter, which is ironically available as their only manual option, but with a 6 speed.

I didn’t even know the Colorado was available with a manual. Too bad it’s only in the ext cab

My 2.7 2nd gen has crank windows.

But seriously..mine's a 2wd. Does what I need which is daily driver, homeowner chores, and doesn't murder my wallet on fuel prices

And only 2wd, as well. In Canada, you can't get the Tacoma dcsb with a 4cyl, but I noticed Chevy offers the Colorado in that configuration.

Also can't get the deisel in any base package. 35k minimum. Maybe I'm in the minority but I still enjoy my 2.7 5M.

I like my hand crank windows, I can roll them up after I shut off the engine.

Heck yeah man! Honestly if I had a shop and deep deep pockets I’d so do that one myself. Find a 12-14 RC M/T and extended the bed!

    And pint it Quicksand too!

Same with the power windows, you can activate them for 30 seconds after shutting the truck iff, or until you open a door.

Me too, but i wouldn't complain if it made 80hp/liter like the chevy does. Thec2.7 would be cranking out 216hp!:burnrubber:
