Worth it to buy a used 2020-2021 Tacoma for ~$40,000?

I pick up my New Tacoma last month with 13 miles it was 2300$ off so I got it for $39,300

Lol. The vehicle just has to be smogged at registration. Most modern vehicles have no issues. But if you’re importing something from overseas or modifying a vehicle, then you might have problems.

Maybe depending what trim and tech package. If a standard trd, that's about average what they sell for here when the the dealer can get them. Right now their in short supply.

 

I would go 1-2 year old CPO. 7 year 100k powertrain warranty.

I wouldn’t spend more than $40k for one of these trucks brand new. Let alone over $40k for a used one. That’s really pushing the cost/benefit ratio out of wack.

Too many competitors these days. I’d look at a ranger or frontier if it meant saving close to $10k. They’re perhaps less reliable but up to $10k buys a lot of repairs.

 

My vote would be OH HELL NO. I'm only buying a double cab 4x4 SR5 V6 but I'm out the door at around $36K after all the other BS like documentation, etc.... Dealers are JUST NOW becoming willing to negotiate....seriously just within the last month or so. Inventory of new is building and used prices are through the roof. AND.....interest rates for used are much higher than for new. I'd look new personally.

At 40k why would you want to buy a used truck that someone return because there was probably something wrong with it? Drive out of state and pickup a new one for 40k.

 

Tacomas are not in short supply. Hybrid toyotas are.

 

Try to build your truck on toyota.com and find the dealer who does msrp. That's how I got my 2022 toyota. had to wait though

 

No, not worth it.

 

You just have to smog it when registering it in the state. Any new truck will pass emissions. The 55 bucks to smog a car is well worth the savings if you're just driving over to Nevada to pick it up at a not Bay Area price.

To answer OP's question though. Don't buy a used truck for new truck prices. Shop around.

 

I wouldn't buy used for new car prices. I called around until I found a dealer that just charged MSRP and a dealer doc fee of $299, looked at their allocation list and picked one. My only two must haves were OR and MT. This was last May and I waited about 6-7 weeks from the phone call to picking it up.
They have received and sold and presold nearly 375 since then and only 2 other OR with MT showed up after mine. On a side note, they called me today to see if I was interested in trading mine in straight for a 2023 OR DCSB with Auto. They have a long time customer looking for an MT and they don't think they will be receiving any more based on the pass six months of allocations. I only have 2,500 miles on mine and not letting go but it was kind of tempting.

 

I still feel like a big idiot paying MSRP for a new truck. At least I didn't pay MSRP for a used truck.
