I had my 01 frame replaced. They gave me a limited Tundra for two weeks. I didn't mind. That and all the new parts they replaced made it worth it. It had 300k and they dropped $12k into it. I ended up totaling it and still got 3k for it with a ticking engine.

My 04 had that grease coating applied by Toyota when it only had 25k miles on it so its all good. My dad got really lucky that his truck failed inspection cause it only had a few months left on the 12 year thing and I knew it would fail eventually. So I grabbed the weld chipping hammer and went to town tapping on every rust spot I could see until I found one that gave way. Only rust on the body is a bit on the tailgate which is easy to replace someday. Toyota really did its customers a solid by offering to replace frames. Jeeps and the GM Colorados/Canyons suffer from the same rust issues and never got so much as a dealer applied undercoating to my knowledge.

    my 2 cents,
Pay off your truck and wait a couple years before purchasing another truck. a car payment is not supposed to be a constant part of life, and if it its, you may be living beyond your means.

It's been many moons since I lived up north, but that seems pretty clean for an 8 year old N.E. truck. Where did it come from?

Why are you dumping the Ford? Well, other than being a Ford.

Definitely something to consider. To be honest, owning the Ford is more stressful than it's worth. It's a lot of truck and while I do enjoy driving it, and get a lot of use out of it - its versatility is off the charts, so far its spent 1.5 months at the dealer for TSBs after owning it for a year. I stress about getting chips in the paint and hitting potholes too hard since it cost so much. And to top it off, an unfortunate collision with a deer. Parts are on backorder for at least a month to fix it. Now it's sitting at the shop until that is all sorted out! I would rather drive a smaller, cheaper, reliable used truck, and with the equity plus a good downpayment, aggressively pay it off and not have to worry about it.

You'll be able to clean up the underside and never have worries. It amazes me after working in Massachusetts general area and see the way vehicles deteriorate up there, why on earth would anyone purchase a new vehicle and not have rust protection done. I'm just in the midwest and seen firsthand the difference it makes. Spend 30k on a new vehicle and not another 500-700 to prevent having a rust bucket 10 years down the road.

FYI that's the factory original spare tire, which would be around 9 years old by now and hard as plastic. Typical shelf life for tires is 6 years. You should replace the spare tire, though you may find the tire winch seized. Rest of the truck looks fairly good for being a 9-year old New England vehicle. You may find other things seized later on (like the rear diff fill plug...)

By the way, paint doesn't stick to frame welds unless you take a flap disc to them first. Even 1-year old trucks will rust along the welds due to the factory paint falling off.

Thanks for the info! I'll try to drop the spare and see what kind of shape it's in. Diff plug does look rusty...
