So I just bought a combo of Kicker KS series tweeters, KS 6x9s and CS series 6 3/4 rear door speakers. How would I go about adding an amp to this setup? I'm perfectly capable of soldering and merging harnesses, but knowing how and where to install an amp, along with what specs I should be looking for in an amp, is where I lack the skill and knowledge.

Everything I read about installing speakers like these seems to mention how weak the power output is to the rear speakers, and that the whole system would benefit from an amp or new head unit. I just bought the truck, and would like to retain the head unit if its possible to supplement the power.

As long as its a non-JBL system - absolutely! The Kicker CS upgrades are so worth it!

Here is a link to installing an external amp and sub to the stock Tacoma headunit. Some special harnesses are needed, but best of all, there is zero splicing involved...

Thank you, I appreciate the quick response. I'll give that a watch right after work.

I just replaced the non-JBL stock speakers in my truck last night with the Kicker bundle from TrailGridPro.com, and I can finally say that it is definitely worth the upgrade while still maintaining the stock head unit. Adding an amp and a sub would provide one kick a$$ sound system. However, that's not what I was looking for. I just wanted more clarity and depth, and that's what I now have. I'm sure you can achieve similar results buying components from Crutchfield or Amazon, but I chose this kit because it's specifically designed for the Tacoma with or without the stock head unit. I also liked the idea of it being plug-n-play and it's currently on sale. Install took me about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish, including adding sound deadening directly behind the door speakers and cleanup. It was very easy thanks to the excellent installation instructions. I highly recommend this kit for an easy upgrade to a relatively disappointing stock sound system.

    Just starting.
I upgraded to the widely popular kicker door and dash tweeters everyone recommends, and thought it actually sounded worse (before adding the key amp). The tweeters were brighter, but the doors were muddier and quieter on the new speakers. I did one side first and compared them vs. stock fading left to right for comparison.

Then added the kicker key amp, and there was a night and day difference! Way louder and clearer sound. Don't upgrade anything without an amp!

Go with OEM Plus. They have three package options: 1. Speakers upgrade only. 2. System 500 -Multi-Channel PA w/ Subwoofer. 3. Reference 500 - Mult-Channel w/ Subwoofer plus speakers upgrade.

I installed the OEM Audio+ Reference 500 with a dedicated sub amp (8" sub) a couple years ago. Kept standard non-JBL head unit. Really nice system!
