I've been looking to buy a Tacoma in California for about a month straight and I'm about to give up. Just wondering if a stock 2nd gen would pass CA smog if it was brought out of state. I know that vehicles are now made to pass emissions in every state but I'm not sure about the older vehicles.

    Thanks for the replies :).

Unless its tampered with or other emmion issues, out of state are no problem

What part of Ca.? Been thinking about selling my 08 xRunner

They don’t do a sniffer test on 2001 and newer cars in ca so as long as there is no check engine light and it can pass a visual inspection test (all the smog parts are there) you’re good to go. You will have to go to a truck stop and weigh it before taking it to the dmv since ca needs to appropriately tax your commercial pickup truck

One thing of note is that a vehicle sold in CA is required to come with a valid CA smog cert (<90 days old).

Purchasing out of state you take the risk of it failing upon “import.”

But any 50 state emissions vehicle, in unmodified format, should pass CA smog. Assuming it is in proper running order.

Even a new vehicle purchased out of CA must be smogged upon import into CA.

If the truck was never registered in California then yes you need to get it weighed and we are assuming the truck in question never was

I live in California and bought a few trucks out of state before so pretty familiar with the dmv/aaa process

Is that requirement only for used vehicles?

Because I bought mine new out of state, they did not require a weight certificate.

I brought my 2015 in from out of state (used) and it didn't need to be weighed...

I guess it only applies if the state you bought it from doesn’t state the weight on their title

    https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handb...ual-2/commercial-vehicles/weight-certificate/

I purchased mine from Arizona, interestingly they don’t have a place on the back of their title for the price since Arizona doesn’t charge sales tax on used vehicles if purchased private party of course California does so only applicable to Arizona registered operators

3 trucks bought out of state. All 3 needed to be weighed. Tacoma, Tundra, and a Ram 2500. Smog has to be done too in the state of CA.
