It’s simple really, capitalism.

 

Car makers should sell direct like Tesla and Rivian. You configure it on a website and put your $500 deposit on your card and they tell you when to show up to pick it up. I don't care if that's still at a dealer and all they do is repairs. I think car makers have had it with dealer markups, market adjustments and plain gouging in general that gives consumers a bad taste of the brand.

If I could buy on Amazon and just pick up at a dealer that would be fine. Or if there is a fixed price on Amazon that the dealer has to honor, that's good too.

Sure, that's how we purchased wife's Tesla Model 3 back in 2018. First time we saw her vehicle is when we went to pick it up. Of course we went into a Tesla showroom to "kick tires" and test drive first.

Way back when you could buy a model T from a farm store, the fledgling dealer network at the time got laws passed that made it illegal to sell new vehicles if you weren't a dealer. That's changed in some states and not others. We're seeing consumer pushback for those protectionist practices in more then a few "protected" industries. Hearing aids was a recent one. The real estate commission structure is in the crosshairs at the moment. I'll be glad to see some of that go.
