You are looking up 4 runner or FJ numbers. We are talking about Tacoma’s here. The 4.0 in the Tacoma makes 266 tq at 4K rpms. Nice try though.

3.5 with full Otto tune will run circles around the 4.0 any day.

The 4.0 in the current gen 4Runner makes peak torque at 4400 RPMs, so I’m not sure where he got the 3700 RPM from. Genuinely curious about that.

I’m curious as well. I remember the early 4.0s had higher hp and tq numbers with 91 octane, maybe that’s what he was referring to?

I agree with your statement. Although, 2 of my buddies have ATs, 17 and 19 and they shift/drive perfectly fine. Different expectations? Inconsistencies in the Tacoma’s? Who knows.

Been a Toyota guy my entire life. I am pushing 60 now, and with my history of poor lifestyle choices I will be lucky if I make it to 75. I am pretty sure this will probably be my last Toyota.

PS: no regerts; I have had a damn good time!

I have not seen many taking offence at people not liking the 3rd Gen Tacoma or parts of it. I do see people getting their panties up in a bunch (not necessarily you) when others post that they love their Tacoma. There is even a guy who drives a GMC Truck who comes here just to bash the Tacoma. LOL

63... bought a new 2021 about a month ago - my son will be driving a nice ride by the time I pay it off... it'll be well maintained,
will have low miles, and will look sharp and probably be worth as much as I paid for it... got a small yard project underway and
after that I plan on taking many tear-drop-camping trips all over and enjoy sunsets and stars while I can... no regrets when I mingle with the stars.

braking is on par with other mid size trucks available on the market. I dont really see a point in comparing to things you cant get anymore. i wouldnt say it makes me scared of driving at highway speeds. (that just seems like an exaggeration)

I looked up the vehicle that I own with a 4.0 v6 which is a 2008 FJ. I currently still have it and the taco. The difference in low end torque is extremely noticeable. The taco feels like a laggy turbo4 compared to the 4.0 in the FJ. Sorry you continue to get butthurt about my opinion.

    Your opinion is your opinion.

I've also owned an 08 FJ 6MT and my 3rd gen AT.

I don't notice any real difference in how they drove, both start ripping at 3500 RPM. I think the throttle response was better on the FJ, but I just feel like it is a modern vehicle problem. Everything is tuned for efficiency nowadays and that comes at the cost of drivability. In my case I also chalk it up to the differences in trannys. I've only driven an AT FJ once, and it felt sluggish compared to my MT version, but that's generally true always IME.

The 08 FJ 4.0 is 239 HP @ 5200 and 278 lb-ft @ 3700 RPM for all the posters above wondering about the numbers being thrown around. It was rumored for awhile that it was 242 on 93, but I have no idea if that was true.

    Oh god...

Nobody is butt hurt here, how old are you 15?

Do you want to know how much this 3.5 makes in other applications? Way more than the Tacoma. We are talking about Tacoma’s, not FJs. We are on a Tacoma forum if you haven’t noticed.

Y’all need to jack it down. When it comes to Dick size the number of cup holders you have is all that matters.

No I wouldn’t buy another Tacoma. Not that I don’t like Toyota or Tacoma specifically, but I don’t mind sacrificing reliability for a ergonomically better vehicle. I don’t normally keep my cars long enough for a transmission or engine to go out. I think a majority of us Tacoma owners are compromising in some sort of way, wether or not you realize it.

Reliability aside I genuinely think the metal/corrosion protection used on Tacos is inferior to those on GM/Ford mid sized trucks. Sure salt belt vehicles all rust but something about Tacomas don’t feel right.

That being said Toyotas are reliable but when things do break they get expensive quickly. Tundra transfer case motor runs about $1000 wholesale, $1200+ retail, and is OEM only no aftermarket. GM/Ford/Ram you can pick up the same part aftermarket for less than $100 at most auto parts stores. Sometimes reliable has its downsides.

I adore mine. There's a few dude's on here with crazy high mileage. One with 550k if I remember correctly.
