Yes, depends on the vehicle but typically 70% or more of the braking is done by the front. The extreme case (seen on sportbikes) is a stoppie...

    Because Physics.

Minimal. Quick test - but for ABS, can you lock up the rear end with drums? If so, what benefit would any supposedly better braking from discs provide?

Now that I agree with. I wasn't saying you specifically weren't buying it only because of rear drum brakes, but I have actually seen several people say they won't buy it because of rear drums like that of all things is what needs to be focused on with the 3rd gen.

In my opinion, rear drums are fine for a mid sized truck of this caliber and cheap to replace way, way down the road when the shoes finally wear enough.

Are there any Pick Ups other than the Tacoma even sold with rear drums today, usually drums are reserved for the cheapest base models, but trucks are so expensive anymore.

It's still basically a 2nd gen in my eyes. Same chassis codes, same frame design.

    It's a heavily updated 2nd gen, but it's still a 2nd gen.

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
I changed my mind... this thing is annoying me again lately. I would definitely get the 4Runner instead.

Still in the honeymoon phase with my 2017 SR5 (2,000 miles). Since I still have my Gen 1 2002 SR5 I drive both and compare. In all honesty there are nuances with the 2017 that takes getting used to but I'm coming around. Getting better mileage on the Hwy (22 mpg when I keep it below 70) but the new technology, i.e., sound system, et. al. has a learning curve. The one thing that bums me out is that the SR5 does not have the side avoidance alarm which all cars and trucks were suppose to have by 2017? Perhaps next year? The 2017 rides smoother, quieter and is pretty solid on ice due to increase weight over my 2002. I still pack 240 pounds of tube sand over the rear axle. No issues with the 4x4. shifts effortlessly. So...............would I buy again a new 2017. No, I'd wait and see if Toyota improves upon the 2017, e.g., rear discs, side avoidance alarm, maintaining keyed ignition and such on the SR5.

ESP Lockable Rear Seat Storage, MobTown Lockable Bed Hatches, lots of cool Mobtown products (Rear Bumper, complete set of 1/4" steel skid plates, sliders), Old Man Suspension and a bunch of other practical off-road tools to bulletproof my truck...
I have had my 2016 Tacoma OR TRD Short Bed now for over 1 year, although I have had a couple of little issues with the truck and HATE the dealers in my area and their shitty attitude regarding customer service (Northern Virginia - Herndon and Warrenton), the truck is great...I use my truck as a commuter and on my three (3) days off every week, I use it as a real off-road truck. I am developing 20 acres I own for a home and a 4500 sq. ft. "garage" for my toys. This includes driving through creeks, a lot of up and down inclines and up and down hills that are even difficult to walk on....This truck really performs well and will go through mud 10" deep with no issues. Yes, I would buy the truck again if I had too. Over the years I've had 3 Toyota 4x4 pickups (1979, 1984 and 1986). I've also had a number of 4Runners (1987, 1991, 1995 and 1998) and they have all performed better than any other 4x4s I ever had (1973 Blazer, 1977 Chev. Truck, 1979 CJ5, 2003 Nissan Xterra)...I vote Toyota Tacoma for off-road performance and longevity...

The more I drive my truck ... the more I like it .... about 10,000 miles and 10 months old now.

I love mine. I laugh when people say it is under powered. I had a ram 1500 prior to this that had a 5.7 in it. This Tacoma has way more get up and go.

yes I agree- 1 year old, 14K miles and this truck has enough power when needed. Sometimes travelling on the highway late at night with no traffic, I really punch it just for fun. Granted it does not snap my head back like my last truck, but it does have some balls.
I did not buy this truck so I could drag race, and so am really happy with the "power band" lol

I love my truck. No issues so far except the dumb*ss that slammed his door into mine today and then drove off. 200 bucks to a paintless dent repair on Monday will set it all straight again.

If you can engage ABS in a panic stop situation, better brakes won't help unless you drive in situations where brake fade is a concern (track use, heavy load towing in bills, etc). Upgrade the tires until you cannot lock, then upgrade your brakes.

I'd buy my new truck again. The engine is a bit underwhelming but the new interior and toys from the Premium and Tech package absolutely blow the old truck away.

I'm in the odd group that has a massive dislike of the 2G automatic transmission. The torque converter would get into an annoying lock/unlock cycle that drove me nuts. I had my transmission replaced under warranty and it solved nothing. Supposedly the pinging TSB would have fixed it but the dealer wouldn't do it and the truck was totaled before the summer where I could have made it long.

I will say the transmission threads scared me enough into a manual and the diff whine is real. However, the upgraded interior is enough for me to like my 3G. Had they made the 2G with the P&T package, maybe things would be different.

I love the truck and would definitely buy again.
I just wish certain overrides and mods already existed. Stuff like a locker mod, nanny removal, custom engine and trans programs, lots of gear choices, and maybe a supercharger kit.

It doesn't need much aside from the goofy shifting fixed, I would just like options.

8 months and 6000 miles. I love my truck. I only hate the Entune system. It is cumbersome, inefficient and annoying.

And miss all the drama? Noowayyy..

Plus I'm too busy. Today had to run over to a sawmill, many miles down a mud road with an 18ft trailer and get a load of fresh sawn lumber (green).

Kinda nice having the factory integrated brake controller and rear disc brakes hauling this load 40 miles, up and down hills. If I still had the Tacoma it would have been at least 2, maybe 3...

    Keep trucking lil buddy!
