I get where you're coming from but no. Very slippery that day. However lets just say it was dry pavement, middle of summer and spinning on gravel at high speed and then grabbing asphalt. I still firmly believe that should not tear apart a rear end. Maybe if it was repeated over and over again or a high mileage vehicle.

    yes!!!
    Broken Ring and Pinion:
The teeth have been sheared off this ring and pinion set. This is evident in the dull grey areas. The shiny areas have been hammered by the broken gear pieces. This does not indicate that the ring and pinion gear set was defective, but rather that too much power was applied with too much resistance in the tires. This can be caused by too much power combined with oversized tires or tires that are stuck on an off road obstacle. Spinning tires that suddenly catch either off road or on the track can break differential parts as well. Click Here for a larger image

I was not doing anything but humor me for a second. Could you take a brand new truck and take out the ring and pinion without first damaging something else? I'm not being sarcastic or combative but seriously. No one was a bigger advocate for Toyota and especially Tacoma than me. This is really disappointing. I bought a Tacoma against all others because it's a Tacoma! Change the oil and drive it two or three hundred thousand kilometers.

I am almost tempted to go out and dump 37K into a truck I don't need just to see how "bad" these things really are.

If it turns out to be a real POS, then I can tell everyone I am truly having a mid-life crisis.

this is really concerning. My #1 question is could this have been prevented? Should I be checking/changing my diff fluid in my 4k mile Tacoma pronto?

I actually looked into the RS. Had an Evo VIII, and to still hear reviews that the RS still hasn't matched the Evo X in handling and sharpness, threw me off.(of course everything else about the RS is better) Anyways had a '00 TRD 6MT. Came back 6 years after it was recalled and picked up a Pro 6MT. So yes. I'll prolly disappear for another 15 years and come back and reply again :)

I was dead set on the auto and yeah, it's pretty bad. I thought it was just me when test driving. I was like, why does this truck feel weak? The motor mated to the manual is fine given you are tapping all of the power when you want it. If there was more power, I'd want better brakes. Rear discs Toyota! The 6MT makes it a great truck. (Of course you give up quite a bit, craw, smart key, etc) If you are open to driving a 6MT, you may want to test drive it.

Disc brakes are not "better" than drum brakes, will not stop you sooner etc... reason for drum brakes is less wear due to mud sand etc ....and wheeling...

Is Toyota taking care of it for you? What did they say if so? Glad you're safe from when it occurred.

EDIT: Didn't see you created a new thread - I'll stop this convo here even though this thread is off the rails.

Each has its tradeoffs. Rear discs do have an advantage for towing as they can bleed off heat better. Rear drums won't effectively change braking though unless you're driving backwards. Weight transfer to the front axle takes most of the braking load off the rear axle and but for ABS you'd easily lock either.

Blanket statements of wanting disc over drum on rear axles just shows that marketing works.

lets just say your not telling the full story, shall we. the rear diff wont just shread pinion teeth like that unless there was serious operating flaws by the driver spinning the tires at a high rate and then grabbing traction this shit doesn't just happen and I don't know why

Why do the 4R and Landcruiser come with rear discs then as they are marketed as OR vehicles?

I was trying to be a funny.... instead of saying something negative in reply..
