Why do we keep buying these trucks when they are going to end up looking like this eventually? Toyota has no intension to correct the frame issues as long as we are throwing money at them like that. $40K wasted if you live in the rust belt regions. I keep mine parked in the winter so it will last as intended.

What’s crazy to me is that if those frames on the older trucks didn’t rot like they do , can you imagine how many Tacoma’s would still be on the road ? If you think about it , that’s really the only weak link to most of our trucks . I’m surprised some company hasn’t made after market frames for people to buy . If there was I think a lot of the older ones would get saved. The 5VZE motor and tranny combo can last insanely long if we’ll taken care of.

Fluid film will give a frame a fighting chance.
Toyota replaced the frame on my truck 11 years ago and It's still looking great.

Had my '04 frame replaced by Toyota in 2020, was told then it was one of the last done in the country.

That would make a great Donor Truck, but I wouldn't trust it as a daily driver. That Frame could buckle at any time. If your determined to consider buying it, crawl under it with a hammer and test the frame out from front to back. I bet you a dollar that you'll knock a hole in the frame doing the hammer test. If you could source a good replacement frame for that truck, then do it. But only if you can get it really cheap.

If someone has to ask if the truck is too rusty or too expensive, the answer is yes.

ARB Bumper, SOS sliders, SOS rear bumper, SOS skid plate. OME Lift. Some other stuff.
Road salt destroys frames. Keep in mind that truck is almost 20 years old and was obviously neglected. Brand new 1st Gen never came close to costing 40k.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
For me it would come down to price

I would really wonder about the mileage so easy to find a low mileage cluster to swap in.

Where the truck lives also plays into the equation.

First gen campaign ended in 2016. I recently went to Toyota and asked for a frame swap on my first gen and I was told they cannot even get a frame anymore.

I had to resort to frame repair and it's expensive. Again like others have said if it's free go for it.
