I complimented this dude's black 18 DCSB with an ARE shell on it, and he said "couldn't recommend ARE—mine catches wind and wants to lift off the bed" and walked away. Anyone heard of this or experienced it? Seems like maybe a poor installation job?

How are you liking the cap, now that you've had it on for a bit?

Does this Bestop count?! At $600 and some change new, I think I've gotten my money's worth out of it. 4 years old and not a single problem to mention. Keeps things dry and removes quickly when needed.

Absolutely love it. Couldn't be happier. If it's pounding rain and I'm driving on the interstate, a trickle of water ends up in the bed, but not enough for me to care. Taking it road trippin' in two weeks—suspect I will be even more grateful to have it on there by the time I get back. I'm hardly ever hauling anything that warrants taking it off, so it's a ton more storage space.

    You thinking of getting one?

Thanks! Glad it's worked out well for you.
I am seriously considering one, but probably won't be able to pull the trigger until the spring so trying to do as much research as I can now.
Very torn on which brand / model to go with and it seems like peoples' experience with caps on here is very hit or miss.

It also seems that a little bit of leaking is inevitable which I don't mind too much.

Did you end up getting the windoors? If not, any regrets?

I think it's a Coke/Pepsi type deal honestly. You can make yourself crazy researching, haha. Since I have a Leer, and I really like it, I would recommend them. Seems like a lot of folks dig the Snugtops, too, if you're out west and can get ahold of one. I've heard one negative experience with ARE, and that's about as far as my knowledge gets me.

I didn't go with windoors. Just wasn't a huge priority for me. They also seemed more apt to leak. I would 1000% recommend the removable back window. I washed my truck yesterday for the first time with the cap on, and if I couldn't pull that window out to clean in between, I would have been pissed.

Make no bones about it.....I'm CHEAP. Grew up poor and don't like parting with money. That said, I would buy my topper 10 times again...

OK. I paid $250 for a top-of-the-line ARE topper. Bought used off of Craigslist. Seller had just bought his truck for his teen age son to drive. It had a mint MGM short bed topper on it. They got home and pulled it off. I pounced on that deal. I've passed on $800 to re-sell it. After a few months, I would give considerably more.

Road trippin through North Carolina and it has proven to be the most useful purchase yet. Would recommend them 1000% to anyone6AB40C8C-951A-4159-BB71-444CB65963AC.jpg

Leer cap, absolutely worth the price I paid (buy used) - I've stuffed the bed full of gear to the top of the shell on the past few road trips - couldn't have carried that much stuff otherwise.

Bought a soft top, about 2 months in I realized I should have just bought a hard shell.

Finally got my snugtop. Went new because I wanted all the fixings. Ultimately gave up on Craigslist and the backyard dealers marking up their prices of mediocre basic caps.

Only regret - not lifting before throwing on the cap. Didn’t expect the rear to sag that much. GF sees it, goes “hm... I think you need to lift your truck. Looks like something my uncle would drive right now”. Sees it a second time and goes “yeah, you need to scoot ‘er up a good 2-3” and then it’ll look good”

Needless to say, I lifted and all is well again. Ha.
