we had one of those .... my dad was paving the garage (our house is super old and it was originally a barn with dirt floor) ... shes looking over the fence with some guy in a suit and my dad says "just like your decks none of my business, this is none of your business"

she later turned in the neighbor on the other side of her for his granny unit ... he got pissed cause he also knew her deck had no permit ...

luckily said neighbor finally moved in 97 or so, and we havent had problems with anyone since.

I am not a dick, I don't care what my neighbors do. If it doesn't look like ass or if you don't plan on building the ultimate eye sore then make it safe. My only problem here is build one then fork out the money. Buy one from Home Depot or lowes and they will plant that sucker where ever you want, permits be damn.

Given those circumstances, yes. If it is an abomination then it will ultimately affect the home value of affect the values of his neighbors homes.

First thing to do would be, go over and have a neighborly chat with him. Go over your concerns about his project. Lay down the do and don'ts. Then if things don't improve, rat the bastard out. :D

for a shed or some crap like that, I would let no permit slide, but for something big like a house addition... I wouldn't let slide by me. Maybe if he gave me a pack of beer or something or I helped him out but if he is a dick... I would def. call him out on it. It is a hazard... simply put.... what if he has a shady ass wiring job that catches fire one night? He is putting you and your family at risk, and the fire fighters at risk when they have to come over to put the thing out. You would not believe how many runs the dept. I was at went on for faulty wiring jobs done by shady electricians. Give the zoning dept. a call a.s.a.p.... for everyone's safety.

Normally I would say don't be a snitch. But I have seen some really scary do-it-yerself electrical work lately. Like romex twisted and taped with no wire nuts, then just enclosed in the wall behind plywood paneling with no electrical boxes. Can't believe how anyone would do that, not even close to code, but it was there.

I hate all my neighbors, so I would do it.

Each year when the family used to go out of town for New Years, they would blow their fireworks off in our driveway and leave the mess for us to clean up. Or park their car directly infront of our drive way, even though their property line ended about 10 feet to the right of our driveway, so it wasn't even infront of their house. Oh, and they somehow backed one of their F150s into my Dads Camry when it was parked in the street, nearly 35 feet away from their driveway. The Dad claims he did it, I think their kid was drunk and did it. For their kids HS grad they threw him a keg party and had kids parked on both sides of the street drinking and messing with their cars.

The codes are just there for safety, but also to ensure that the construction doesn't affect the surrounding property values. The "abomination" isn't going to make your life any better by the sounds of it. If nothing else their TV is now gonna be that much closer to your bedroom window.

Think of it as being the force of karma paying them back for their crap.

I live in a condo. I have called as I saw people using romex with do wiring when this place is all wired in conduit. Also in Washington a homeowner has to live in his dwelling for 2 years if he does his own wiring, so many here just scab it in and then rent it out. There are 48 units that all could burn. I realize permits are taxes but there is also some shoddy workmanship that goes on especially when faulty electrical could affect me.

Instead of making a permanent enemy, why not make a permanent friend? Head on over there, beers in hand, and ask him to show you his big project. While he's showing you everything, casually ask him about one (or the worst) thing he's done to bother you..... "Hey would you mind not putting the rugs on the fence?"

I can almost guarantee he will be more than apologetic about it and not do it again. Just because he did a few things that annoy you does not mean you can't ask him to make it right.

Case in point: I have some stupid neighbors and the kids like to knock and the door and run, etc. They're just being kids so I don't care and ignore it. One day I found some skateboard decks broken and thrown into my yard. I just went over there and had a chat with their dad...Just a "hey man I'd appreciate it if.." and I couldn't even finish my sentence before he was apologizing and saying it would never happen again. Problem solved, nothing since then.

Don't say anything, just tell him to keep his crap on his yard. Your town will find out eventually when the re-evaluate the house or when he decides to move and they pull the paperwork on his home.

Don’t forget you still live there too.
