Sure. Why not. I would drive one.

The more relevant question is--would I by one? The answer is, it depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is how much more expensive will a hybrid version be over the stock engine trim? Will the higher cost of the vehicle save me money i the long run?

The real obstacle with hybrid technology in trucks has been the cost. It jacks up the cost of the truck by about $10k. Unless gas goes to $10 a gallon, you won't come out ahead over the life of the truck because you will spend less in gas on the stock engine than you would the extra cost of the hybrid engine. These are not Prius cars and trucks have very large engines that would require large power cells. Until the cost issue is resolved, hyrbid technology in trucks will only be a novelty.

Right now, a hyrbid on a tacoma will be too expensive and I doubt Toyota would go this route right. It will be too cost-prohibitive to those already spending $30K on their Tacomas.

I do see this as the future, however. Eventually cost will come down to the point that most people will be asking, why wouldn't you get a hyrbid engine?

    This.
As long as they kept it light weight, and it was still friendly to wheel.

Yeah, maybe super efficient diesel would be better.

I wish they would could keep the tacoma like it is but put in a start hybrid assist that is hooked into the transfer case. An electric motor that helps you get up to speed and uses regenerative braking.

This. I think we'll see a turbo 4 cyl before we see a hybrid. Diesel...I dunno.

    I probably wouldn't.

They have(or had anyways) hyrbrid versions of the Silverado and Tahoe's(not sure if that extended to the Sierra and Yukon) and I think they got the same highway mileage as the non-hybrid versions but matched that with the same city. Like 20/20 or something. My commute is mainly highway and hybrids while still offering great highway mileage are typically getting better city mileage above that, and that doesn't benefit me much.

No way I'd own a hybrid Tacoma. Why use complex hybrid technology when a simple and more reliable diesel technology would increase mileage without giving up hauling and towing capacity?

    ^^this

And I highly doubt you'd be anywhere close to 30mpg. The silverado hybrid supposedly gets 20-23, not much more than the regular silverado at 15-21.

You're probably looking at 25 average real world. But hey, it's your money, not mine...

I don't like the hybrid car, would not even waste my time looking at a hybrid pick up, The Tacoma's cost to much already forget about adding hybrid to the picture.

You know who buys hybrids? First time hybrid owners. The vast majority of hybrid owners do NOT purchase another one.

Kevin C you are 100% correct sir, you have to keep that car forever to ever see any kind of savings. not many people keep there cars for long periods of time anymore.

Not likely... it depends on driving conditions.

Hybrid technology saves fuel through regenerative braking, and using the batteries rather than gas when high torque is needed.

There is a reason that hybrids show higher city MPG than highway.
On the highway, hybrid systems are a liability. You're hauling the weight of the batteries with no benefit.

Around town, stop and go traffic? Hybrids really shine.

And my 4-banger already gets 24.5 to 26.5
