Thinkin of picking up a used soft topper for $300 and making a 2 hour road trip after work.

What's the benefits of a soft topper over a tonneau and bed bars?

I like the looks of both (the soft top a little more since it looks more adventurous lol)

While I'm considering buying a used tonneau, bedmat and bed bars on the other hand.

    What would y'all do?

Personally I like the security of a tonneau.

i like the SofTopper, more room for activities and can be completely removed easily. i'm also biased.

300$ is a great deal though. just make sure it's 3rd Gen-specific. 2nd Gen models will sit above the roofline.

I bought my used softtop and love it. Tonneau covers seem nice but you cant fit shit in there.

I like the looks of the tonneau, but functionality of the softopper. I loved my tonneau on my old F150, but that bed was huge. With a Tacoma, I just couldn't fit much under there, so I sold it after a few months of use. I was going to get a shell, but I like to have the bed open at times as well and would hate the hassle of taking on/off a shell, much less storing it. So I am thinking a softtopper might be the best choice for me.

I really want to get the RCI bed rack with a tonneau cover. I think that can only be done with modifications to the tonneau cover though.

I have both, only use the tonneau during winter because when it's cold I don't want to chance the window cracking when opening on the soft top. 300 on a 3rd gen specific softoper is great, I would not get a best top until the make a 3rd gen specific one.

If I had to choose, soft top all the way.

I've had a softoper and loved it, but it has its limitations: it can't be used as a support rack and is relatively insecure compared to most alternatives. If you need a racking system, with the looks of a softopper, check out Can-Back. They are very pricey, but if you think about it, you will realize that it is multiple products rolled into one (think Softopper with a racking system). With a Can-Back or Softopper, security is still a concern. The wining combo for me is a Can-Back (with a rack system) plus a flush mounted tool box

I really like that Canback. Price is a little steep at $2.5k, but I like all of the features and versatility:

Does that fold up like the softoper?

No, I don't think so. So that could be a disadvantage, although you can take the whole canvas off, if you wanted. On the flip side, you can mount a RTT or racks to the top, just like a shell.

Then I would just buy a shell with rack, now you gave security and storage, for close to if not less money. But lose the advantage of folding up a softoper.

Changing from a tonneau cover to a softopper is the best mod I've made to my truck.

Pretty much nothing I put in the bed of my truck fit under the tonneau cover. So I always needed to roll it up. And as luck would have it, it would always rain. It got to the point where it seemed like I was just driving around all the time in the rain with the bed loaded and the tonneau cover rolled up. Which sort of defeats the point of having a cover over your bed. Since having the Softopper, I haven't needed to lower it once to fit something in the bed. It's much more usable dry area. Honestly, I just plan love it and wish I wouldn't have waited so long to get one or wasted the $200 on a tonneau cover.

Do you ride dirtbikes or own a mofomotorc? If so how did that fit under the soft top?

Used to. I raced motocross for about 10 years. I don't really ride much anymore.

Nope. Not sure what that is, but I don't see why anything that attaches to the cleat rail wouldn't fit.

Yeah, I agree with you, after thinking about it. Helps the Softopper is 1/3 of the cost as well.
