So, I’m trading my 18 DCSB MT OR for a 23 ACLB Automatic in 4x2.

I mainly want the bigger bed. My backseats are empty 99% of the time and there has been times where a longer bed would have been more useful.

i would miss the MT above all else, but I’m also not super in love with it. It’s got it’s quirks, and the tall reverse don’t help for backing up trailers.

but yeah, that’s definitely my biggest downside to this trade.

on the other hand, I’m getting a brand new truck and only adding 3500 to what I owe now.

Total that I plan on paying off as soon as I get the truck and I’m able to. I don’t wanna pay 6% interest.

Does the MSRP listed include any distributor or port add-ons, or a market adjustment? If not then MSRP is about the best you can hope for these days from a Toyota dealer in most areas, assuming the MSRP listed doesn't have a bunch of stuff baked in. $34k on the trade is in line with KBB so all in all you could do worse.

"only adding $3,500" to the amount you owe is not necessarily the proper decision-making criteria.

A few things you may want to consider:

What is your Taco worth in a private sale? (I recently sold a car at 2x the carvana / KBB price)

Are the trim / features comparable?

You are going from a MT Offroad DCSB to an AC 2x4 which is generally a less desirable model in the market.

Is that a good price for the new truck considering trim / features?

It is possible that the deal is more expensive than it appears. - I am not saying it necessarily is, but I'd want to know the answers above in order to be able to have a good picture of what this deal is...

There have been times when I would have wanted a (insert any other type of vehicle attribute here), but I bought my taco knowing what it was... I will not trade vehicles every time I need some other different attribute in my vehicle.

your 2018 OR with a sick and 46k miles is a pretty desirable truck, especially so if its in a good color. the 4x2 AC with an auto is pretty much the exact opposite in terms of desirability from what you got. and theyre asking you to pay more? seems like great position for the dealership, not so great for you. They should be taking money off your total balance rather than adding to it IMO

I agree. The thing with advice is… it’s what people ask for when they already know the answer, they just don’t like it. Let OP spend his only 3,500.

So you think they should give him a truck that is 5 model years newer with no miles and pay him to take it? Let me know where the dealer is that does that I'll be there tomorrow.

IMHO, they'll be paying someone (or a business) to take a 4x2 AC SR or SR5 off the lot at some point this summer. With both rising rates and inventory no one will be jumping up and down to pay sticker for a 2wd pickup, especially as the new body style 2024's start hitting the lots this fall.

Rates are definitely higher than they were a year ago, but Toyota has the lowest inventory level in the country of any non-luxury manufacturer.

My local dealership (which is known to be scummy) had 9 new tacos on the lot with 70+ in transit. all of them have "market adjustments" of -$500 to -$2000.
Same with 2023 Tundras. 11 on the lot with 30+ in transit all of them listed as MSRP with a market adjustment of -$500 to -$2000.

Toyota may have they lowest inventory level in the country but that's not great benchmark given that FCA still builds vehicles

All I can say is why didn't the op do a private sale?...the outcome would have been better. On top of it, these msrp's are way inflated anyways to begin with.

Not good. You’re in between Kelley Blue Book trade-in and private party, so that aspect is fair. Get them to takeoff the Toyoguard, which is absolutely worthless. Assuming it’s a ceramic coating dealer add-on then you can get half taken off whatever they’re charging you for that. Assuming there’s no other add ons baked in like the other guy said then that will get you to fair. A good deal would be another thousand off. Good deals are hard to come by these days.

It’s alright guys. I appreciate all the feed back you gave.

i backed off the deal. While I may not use 4x4 that often I decided I should keep it for the resale value as pointed out.

Idk what toyoguard is, but if it's anything like the ceramic glass coating the dealer farmed my truck out to have, imo, it's been well worth it. I had older toyota trucks that didn't have it, and having seeing this truck over 3 years later, I wish it was available at that time.

Can my man just get bed extender or small trailer?

At the end of the day it is just $. Why not just keep both (you owe less than $10k)? If your 4x4 is just a mall truck do it. Seems like that is what you want to do. I like the extended cab look.

Have you tried a private sale of a car with a lien? It isn't easy. I would never buy one. Not to mention that depending on the state, trading lowers the sales tax. In Fla, he would have to pay an extra $2k in sales tax buying without a trade. Private party sales are good for cheap cars.

MT to AT is a decent recipe for disappointment.

I fully agree on the limited value of the 5’ bed. Looks nice though. Just a medium sized trunk. Adding a topper helps with volume but not length.

If trading I would hope/hunt for that same deal as OP had numbers-wise but DCLB. That seems like it would add some value back if giving up the MT is palatable. In that scenario, 4wd would be nice to have but would add cost and maybe isn’t necessary.

Many of us MT guys wish we could have bought DCLB MT.

Trading a manual 4x4 for an auto 4x2 seems like a pretty big downgrade to me.
