    Rain Visors,
Ok so here's the deal. I've owned a taco before as well as 3/4 ton before. I sold to pay off debt, and next year I have NO choice, i am going to need a car. It's either going to be a Taco, DC, 6-spd TRD OR packackge, or a Ram 2500 6 Speed, Crew cab, short bed 6.7 Cummins. Either one I will get 2/3 years old.

I want a manual, i know auto's are just as good, but this is going to be a 100K truck and i like it better. I also don't want a 1/2 ton because they lose value so damn fast, taco's and diesels will hold a lot of value.

I do construction, and this is where i LOATHE the taco, the inability to get a 4' wide sheet in the back is mind numbing. But I do have an enclosed trailer, but it's not always fun to have to get it to get materials.

I have towed 7K with that taco before, and it works just fine, esp with trailer brakes, although it does stress the taco out more than a bigger truck.

I love the fact that The maintence costs on the taco is MUCH MUCH lower, and with maintence it will run forever. Parts are also much cheaper.

The interior of the Taco is nicer, but its also my family car, and the back seats aren't huge. Im not a big guy, but room is nice.

As for the cummins. I have a bigger bed and capacity, which means i dont have to run for a trailer.

I do tow, nothing that the taco wont pull, but so much easier with the 3/4 ton.

A con is its just huge, its fun and all but driving a 8500 truck as a daily driver is a pain, sometimes

It will sell for a lot when im done.

Maintence is HUGE, everything is expensive, $90 oil changes, $250 tires, $50 fuel filters.

I just cant decide if the convience of having never to take it easy, or run for a trailer, is worth the extra money. And tha's all it is convience.

I know I am a taco sight, but im sure there are some ppl that can give valid opinions.

FYI I'D RATHER drive the taco, just trying to figure it out.

Sounds like even though you'd like the Taco more the cummins would fit better. IMO at least.

    I want both.

Why would you consider a 5' bed Tacoma for a small construction oriented truck ?

    Rain Visors,

I do GC work, not so much a tradesmen. But I have the enclosed trailer that houses all the tools from framing, to painting to plumbing.

Sometimes, I'll do a project, painting, a tile job, ect. So it's easier to carry everything in trailer vs having to load what I need.

I also tow cars bout once a month. Which I did fine with my old taco, a little slow but it worked great.

The taco bed is small, but same length as the ram, but the ram i can load a pallet in, and can also pull so much easier. I also love the inside space of the ram.

But the taco is 1. Cheaper to buy up front, 2. Cheaper to maintain 3. Cheaper to insure. Also better in snow. And even tho its not huge inside it holds me just fine. and if the kids are tight so be it.

    Rain Visors,

    Larry,

That's what happends most of the time, Except when I just need 4 sheets of ply wood.

Or 20 peices of dura rock and tile, and the weight starts to climb. I know Airbags helped a lot towning

It's funny. I'd rather drive the smaller truck but even wife said, go with bigger. It's just so expensive to fix a 3/4 ton truck, but on flip side it only works at 40% capacity so doesn't wear or break as fast.

IMHO if i was you i’d get the cummins. with towing 7k(over the tow limit of the taco) and the much bigger bed will give you more room and may not have to tow a trailer as much.

My question is why a 5' bed if you do get the Tacoma , do you intend to use the locker or offroad ?

that coast money and unless the god is really big it can coast more to have it delivered than it would if he transported it him self.

    Rain Visors,

My loaded trailer is probably about #4500-#5500 lbs. I was just saying I have towed 7k with it, and albeit slow, it did it just fine. I once towed 10500 trailer. An F250 on an all steel car hauler, that wasn't fun at all.

So it will do the 4500-5500 fine.

The tacoma is just so much better and so much cooler.

    Rain Visors,
the difference between the 5' and 6' bed isn't huge. That extra food isn't going to make all the difference in the world. But I want a manual, and the OR package trucks hold their value slighty more. And The overall cost of the truck is what it COSTS ME, so at the end if i can sell it for more, my cost of ownership goes down.

yeah Tacoma's are cool. but if i towed a often i would like to have a more power to do it easier. also when you start towing up and down hills the taco MPG goes to shit. cummins will get much better mpg towing and hauling heavy loads. will will stop better when loaded, and just do the job 10x better.

    Rain Visors,

That's it right there, for the jobs im doing is repair work in rentals, where its' oh i need a few drywall boards, this that and other thing, don't have time to wair for delivery, and the added cost isn't worth it.

I also look at it now as since i sold my truck to pay off debt, I've still been working and in a 98 Jeep grand cherokee. I have it LOADED with tools, and i tow around a 6X8 trailer most of the time to haul trash, haul material what ever. So even though it would be EASIER with the ram, i know i COULD do it with the taco.

    Rain Visors,

That's where I am at. I know the taco WILL do it, but just harder. The trailer that houses all the tools i just looked at last weight slip is #4775. So the taco will pull it around when i need it to, no issues there.

Truthfully a 1/2 ton would be perfect for me but I can't get stick ( i want ) and they depreciate so poorly it's not worth it.

There is only one problem with the Cummins.

    It's wrapped in a Dodge.
