We have 2 SR5's. We love them. Both are 2wd with towing pkg. and both built in Texas. Mine a 2016 was a quart low on trans fluid manually checked by the dealer. Hers is a 2017 and has not been checked. I had the TSB done on mine. Drove fine before and fine after. We dont do ANY freeway traveling so i can not tell you how it is in traffic on the expressway. But on the Arizona desert surface streets it is awesome.

I still don't know about that. most people have the howl, very few have blown up, just been replacing them. my dad's 2011 tundra with 40k does the same thing at 50 mph. I'm not sure there is actually an issue with the diff. there may be angle issue or something. I put my truck on a lift and had a buddy run it up to speed. I didn't hear anything in particular other than the normal sound of gears that are free wheeling. it makes a clacking sound that sounds bad but every vehicle I ever put on a lift does it. I think what we are seeing is a noise being brought up to very dumb techs who don't know what they are looking for. the other techs at my toyota shop thought the same thing.

I think you will be ok. The transmission issues are more of a nuisance (post TSB) than anything else. I wouldn't worry too much with it. Overall, the truck is pretty nice. I just think they released it a little early, and we ended up being the testers. I feel Toyota will stand behind the vehicle.

For what??? All my complaints listed seem to be design/engineering related. I'd like to email them though just so they'll know that not everyone who owns a Tacoma is "drunk off the notion" that "It's a Tacoma" everything is lovely!

I read here alot and post sporadically, but I swear it seems to me that those that are "happy" just has their "bar of satisfaction" set VERY low. How can anyone think it's OK for a $38000+ truck to sound hollow and uninsulated???? My 2000 Tundra seemed to built to higher standards...What's up with that!? From the first day I purchased that truck, April 2000, it's build quality was evident. I kept that truck 15 years and I am kicking myself in the ass for getting rid of it!!!

Toyota is charging a premium price for the Tacoma now and WE as consumers should DEMAND a premium product, but nooooo they change the front end...gussy-up the interior (It is nice tho)...make it a little larger and people are like "Yahoooo, I love it!" Nevermind that the body sounds hollow and cheap!!!

Well that about does it for my bi$% session. I'm done with this...I made a mistake it's time to Man up and move on!!!!

    Peace...I'm out!!!!

Great trucks, maybe a few on here with legitimate problems. The rest of the people just like to keep shit stirred up.

Agreed. I agree with your sentiment JQ. I was pretty ticked too. However, if you file with corporate, you will likely get something done about your issues. I feel your pain.

What did you come frome? I have never felt the taco had shit in the roof.

I agree the price has climbed, but the taco and tundra are different trucks and I would expect the tundra to have a better feel inside. We didn't buy the Forester or Rav 4 when we were replacing my wife's car, because they felt cheap. I am working on getting my 3rd taco, and honestly the interior is a step up from what I have been used to in previous tacos. But I am not buying it for its interior, well we the double cab size, but I am getting it for the history of lasting. Not to mention the "investment", my 09 MSRPed at 24,055, not sure what I paid but I know I got 1k off, so it wasn't over 23k or so, drove the truck 8 years and getting 13.5 in trade. Haven't had to do anything to the truck, except tires and oil and normal required stuff. That's like 1250 or so a year to drive a fun truck, I can handle that.

I'm burning a quart of oil every 3k miles or so.

Not acceptable. (Yes, ticket open, Toyota has informed me that it's only actionable at 1 quart / 1k miles)

That, and Entune reboots a lot at random times.

Beyond that, it's still a more comfy truck than a 2nd gen which I could have gotten in 15... and it does pretty well offroad and on trails.

Only had for 8 days but love it so far. Off-road is fun and on-road has been the most comfy vehicle I have owned.

I would buy another without hesitation. I had a 2016, traded it back in, looked at all the options offered in the market and decided that nothing comes close to what these tacomas offer. I suggest you trade in your truck for something else and we will see you back in a year.
I did like the Colorado with a diesel but I was a bit concerned with the issues they had and the overall reliability of the brand.

I haven't voted yet, because I haven't had mine long enough to comment on reliability, but coming from daily driving a 50 year old volkswagen, and a 20 year old 4 cylinder wrangler lifted on 33's, the '17 Tacoma SR is awesome. I didn't expect much power from the 4 cylinder, and I ordered a 5 speed to make up for it, and avoid the things I didn't like about the slushbox.
I expected the thing to ride like a truck, and let a little noise in here and there, and get shitty gas mileage. I am a burly male with a beard and an affinity for the outdoors.
This truck fits everything I wanted, and nothing I didn't, while being the nicest vehicle I've ever owned. I hope to see the reliability from this truck that I've gotten from past Hiluxes and jeeps I've had, even through years of neglect and abuse, both offroad and on.
If I wanted a prius or a camry, or a corvette, I would have bought one. But those suck off road, and can't carry 2 dirtbikes.
I am happy with my purchase so far.
It will eventually get more aggressive tires and steel bumpers/rock sliders.

Aside from my 2000 Tundra Limited, I traded a 2014 GMC Sierra SLE with the American Luxury Coach pkg. I only had that truck for 7 months because it was too high getting in and out of daily. It was a really nice truck aside from the squeak that the dealer couldn't find! I hate squeaks/rattles!!! Now when the temperatures dips below 55 my Tacoma has just recently developed a rattle in the lower corner of the passenger side windshield. Once the interior warms up it stops.IMG_0824.jpg

Unfortunately, I am about $6k upside down(long story how I got there), so it looks like I just have to live with my dissatisfaction and poor choice(s).

My old truck was totaled, so I needed a replacement truck. I really wanted a sunroof more than pretty much any other option available and that was something the '16 had that the '15 and prior did not. 98% of pre-3G trucks had already gone through winter up here and were showing surface rust all over the frame since they were not yet treated. I read a lot of complaints about the automatic on the new truck, so I went manual. I have zero complaints with the truck. Are there things about it I'm not the biggest fan of, sure. The power delivery is awkward and I have a diff howl, but I'm not buying a truck to be fast and the howl will get noted at the service intervals and I'll keep an eye on it. I've got 60K for it to fail before I stress about it, and if Toyota comes up with a replacement version that is superior, I'll be the first one in line for it.

I had an old Toyota pre-Tacoma with the 22RE that had broken chain guides (the supposedly indestructible motor) and a 2G Tacoma with automatic transmission shifting issues (the supposedly perfect Tacoma). I also owned a 2006 STi that supposedly blows motors and spins rods if you breathe wrong for almost 10 years without a single mechanical issue. The 2016 has met my expectations and if anything breaks, I'll either fix it under warranty, or fix it myself.

I try to avoid the 3G forum as much as possible. If anything, I'm looking at what people have done to personalize the trucks and that's about it. Otherwise it's no better than reading a Facebook group of your local town with residents bickering over trivial issues.
