So I have this idea, with Osama gone next step would be to bring soldiers back to US. As the return gift,, government to buy foreclosed homes and give the them to soldier families as free gift, tax free. This way those families will have mortgage free, tax free place to live.
Of course that has to come off from our taxes so would you support that?

i think our economy is pretty fucked up. so i wouldnt recommend it. i support the troops but we have an economy to fix before going out and buy homes for every single soldier that came back from the war. its a kind idea, but i dont think its beneficial. plus now that osama is dead, i dont think the next step is to bring soldiers back. i think the next step is to prepare for some sort of revenge.

I certainly support the troops but I don't need to be put in the poor house because my taxes just took a huge unexpected jump. If the government could find a good way to do it, I'd be all for it but this is one of those things that sounds good in theory until you try to put it on paper and make it work.

The money we spend on war a day is way more than buying some cheap housing for them when we bring them home.

Just to give every soldier a home, what about those who have homes and aren't in need, do they get a home to do what they want with or do they lose on this benefit altogether; is there a minimum time served, etc.? I am a huge supporter of our troops and helping them out, but I would want to see all the details before. Too many questions to just say yes.

i say if the war ends, lets chill out for a second and save some money. plus, are we talking if the war completely ended or is this idea for any soldier coming home whether one at a time or 1000's at a time.

Cheap housing? This is where it gets sketchy, which houses do they get? The multimillion dollar home owned by a former exec. who lost all in the crash, or the home in the ghetto that never had a chance from the get go. I know this is an extreme, but not all the houses that are foreclosed are equal, so what is the determining factor.

Not to mention a lot of forclosures need major repair work, who fronts this bill?

I think this would help fix economy. It would help real estate market, and at the same time it would give soldiers a place to live with out putting mortgage/rent pressure on them. The amount of money spent on Iraq & Afghanistan war should be enough to pretty much cover that with maybe little extra tax collected. And by removing foreclosed homes it would help jump start construction of new homes. To me thats worth it.

eh it might help the economy as far as real estate market, and the construction industry, good point. so are we going to give the veterans homes too? how about a free home but they pay taxes on it. the government is one of the strong sectors that make up the economy, they need tax money.

How about days served = translate to $$ amount of new home value.
    Then maybe lottery for locations.
Combat days x2 for value. :notsure:

This is assuming they're all coming home. Someone else said it and I agree, I think there's going to be some retaliation. Osama wasn't out shooting up the military or flying planes into buildings himself, he's got a lot of followers who are, unfortunately, capable of doing a lot of harm and I'm sure they're not happy with the US.

I think this is a kind gesture in theory but I don't see it being realistic. Too many people are on their last leg financially or already sunk so the onset of more taxes does not seem like an attractive idea regardless of how much we would all like to do something like this for our troops.

we got the troops to worry about and we have ourselves at home to worry about. so many of us here at home are fucked bc of the economy. i dont think you would have alot of happy campers seeing the troops get free homes when some of us are suffering here.

Maybe, but again, goes back to who determines what? You got your free house that was 5000 sq. ft. in immaculate condition, and I got 1200 with holes in the wall. Sure, I can have it fixed, but this is the line I am talking about, where is it drawn as to who gets what?

Just because we got osama doesn't mean the war is over. As for paying more for them what is your reasoning that is there job they do what they do because that is there job. My dad was in every war and conflict since vietnam and 6 tours to iraq. My brother is over there right now and just had a kid but he didn't care because he signed up and knows that it is his job. I get supporting the troops my dad is 44 years retired and my brother is 6 years in and they both live in huge houses bigger than mine and are not hurting for money. I think the way the economy is right now that would not be a good idea.

This is where I wouldn't be totally against it, but would have to see the details. I am all for supporting our troops seeing as how they have supported us with their lives on the line.

At the same time, one of original fredoms was from taxes, so to up our taxes for this? Maybe a reallocation of spending would be more appropriate?

i highly doubt that troops will be coming home so soon. just because osama is dead doesnt mean that there isnt some other ass that took his place, maybe even years ago. i dont think that our agenda in the mid east was always just to get osama anyway.

as far as tax paying civilians buying homes for soldiers families... i say no way. i am not military and thanks everyone for their service but this isnt the days of the draft where men and women have been forced to join. our military is made up of those who made a choice to serve, based on what they new they would get in return, knowing the situation the US was in overseas. i think that the govt should pick up any medical bills that may incur for these soldiers, education costs, and probably much more than what they cover now, but again they know what they are getting and choose to do it. but for them to get free houses, which im sure many do already when active, or on base or training...no way. sorry

If you feel inclined to help the service members out then do it without the redtape and inefficiency. Find a good reputable charity and donate to that, there are plenty out thier that have good track records and you dont have to worry about the govt screwing it up and giving away rundown section 8 homes to OIF/OEF vets a moving the money to some pet project.
