Anyone had one of these offers or accepted one as im describing below?

My 2017 Tacoma is going into the dealership for a service 2 tomorrow morning(113,000km or 70,000 miles). Got a call from the sales manager and they are desperate for my truck. I told them i still owe to the bank and they are like.. no problem. We will pay off that loan for you and your truck is in positive equity right now and we will use the positive equity left over as a down-payment and get you into a new Tacoma.

Apparently they are hurting for Used Tacoma's so bad they are basically begging for trucks. I told them i was open to talking but I'm not committing to anything until i see their numbers. Kind of a weird situation but might be a good moment to capitalize.

Yeah, a lot of people have gotten calls, myself included.

I put them on hold (mute) and see how long it takes them to hang up. Then block the number.

They can make more money selling your old truck after buying it from you than they can selling a new one from Toyota.

Used car trade ins are a gold mine for the dealer.
They buy your truck off you and pay off your old loan.
Then they sell you a new truck with a new loan through them.
Then they sell your old truck with a loan through them.

Now they are able to sell 2 loans by just buying your truck from you. They paid off your loan cash, so they dont have any interest to pay on that, and they just collect on the new loans. Plus they made money off selling your car to start with and the car they sold you.

Buy your truck for 25k, sell it for 30k instant 5k profit. Add the interest on that new loan and there is another 3k. Then they made 2k off you buying a new truck, plus another 4k off the interest on the new loan. If they are not providing the loan (buy here pay here type places) then they are collecting a fee for selling a lenders loan to you and the person who buys your old truck.

if that is the case and your considering selling it, take the amount they offer you and post it privately for few grand more.

Common practice for sales to approach customers in the service department for a new vehicle. If service advisor refers he/she usually gets a kickback. I'm more curious about the Tacoma inventory with the dealer you're working with. I'm surprised they have anything or can find anything lately.

I tellem, even if I broke one fender and drilled holes in all the rest?! They’re all “Yea!” Even if I cut the exhaust! “We will work out a great deal! More modifications the better!” Okay, but I won’t take less than $60k on my beat up modded out 2016! “ohh that’s awesome bring it in! We’d love to see it!”

They will say anything to get you in the door and right now the price will be damn good but when you’ve don’t fucked up your truck 15 times over trying to figure out what works best that offer will never get to where it needs to be! A semi-stayed stock will for sure make you think about it though!

    Working on it ...
Had my truck for almost 1 year and 10 months. 34k miles on it now. I got a letter in the mail offering me more than $1800 over when I paid for it out the door brand new on December 28, 2019.

I want to piggyback on this. Not only everything he said, but the finance guy is going to f*ck you, hard!, or at least try. When I bot mine last year, I knew what interest rate I was able to get with a 800+ credit score. The man quoted me 3.5%. I said, "stand by, I can beat that through my credit union." Him: "Oh wait," he says, I think I can get it lower" Me: "Yeah well, you got three minutes cuz' I don't think it will take that long through this app on my phone." He matched my bank's rate.

The finance guys are the real sharks at the dealership. See my signature line, for buy waste time!

Dealer called me a few months ago and offered to buy my old Tacoma and I turned them down. Was at dealer parts dept. last month and sales approached me again. Got to thinking and checked Autotrader for what trucks like mine were listed for. I was blown away! Five K less than I paid for the thing ten years ago. I may sell it private and wait until things settle down before buying new.

The main problem is, even if you sold it to the dealership for some crazy price, what are you going to replace it with? lol

Do you want a new Tacoma? If so it's a great time to order one.

Your truck is 5 years old and will have huge equity right now, assuming you didn't roll up some crazy negative equity into your 2017 when you got it. I sold a 2 year old SUV for more than I paid for new just recently.

Advantage of trading in is that you will save a few grand on tax as well if your truck is financed as well. Again all this is good if you actually want a new truck. If not keep the 2017 and pay it off!

I had a positive experience in this situation. I got almost what I paid for my 2019 SR5 and got into a 2021 Offroad for a lower monthly payment.

I went to the stealership the other day to pick up a few oil filters since I’m having trouble finding the brands I like and I had 2 dealer vultures breathing down my neck telling me they wanted my 2011 Tacoma. I told them NOOOOO and they were dead serious wanting it. Told em 40K which was the only way to get ‘em to let up. I seriously don’t really care for the inside of the new Taco, too plastic for me. Lol.
