Yeah.... I’ve had the call from my dealer too. Let’s see....

My 2020 taco has just under 12,000 miles. I owe just over $12k on the loan. The loan has a zero % interest rate.

    Nope....

I have also installed the three things that a 5-lug RC never came from the factory with (the backup camera is slightly obscured by the zombie flag and Spider Biter Billy at the moment, though)...

Demand is always strong for Tacomas and generally all trucks. When supply dries up this type of thing happens. Also have to remember we pay quite a bit less for new Tacomas in Canada right now considering markups are illegal here and our dollar sucks. So a lot of these used trucks where I am anyways get exported to USA with profit to be had on all sides.

Demand must be out of control. I just did a Carvana valuation on mine. Carvana offered $41,103

How is that possible? I paid $36.5k, 18mos and 12k miles ago.

How can there be any profit in that?

Place I went to said they would guarantee trade in price for at least a few months (until new truck arrived) so they obviously don't think shortages will end any time soon and thus used prices will remain high.

This is their showroom. It's insane.

I’ve heard of a couple people making MORE money on their trucks by selling them right now than when they bought em… crazy huh? Mines not for sale but it’s kinda cool if you were interested in selling ya know?

I took advantage and just traded up the beginning of this month (oct. 2021).
I had a 17 MGM Dbl Cab Off Road (paid $34k in Oct. 2017 and financed through TFS (Toyota) for 2.49%. It had 45k miles and was stock, with the exception of Clazzio Leather seat covers, and I was getting close to needing a set of tires. The local dealer offer $32k for trade-in. For me, I couldn't pass it up. Drove away in a 21 AG Dbl Cab Off Road loaded up with all of the bells and whistles, which the previous truck didn't have, at $45k (MSRP) and a 2.19% APR through Bank of America through the dealer (TFS was still at 2.49%).

I am happy with the result, and at the end of the day, that is all that matters to me!

Luckily I don't need to win an internet argument over this. Just happy with my purchase.

Used cars have no price cap, there's lots of profit involved with them right now. New cars have a MSRP that is locked so there's less profit in it in this market right now.

Yeah, but when I was deciding on what Taco to get, I looked up prices of used trucks and found out they were hardly lower than the MSRP on a new one! So I just got a new one. I guess either some people like the bells and whistles on the used ones that bring up their price, or they must just be bad at pricing things.

I think it's more people can't buy new ones and can't wait. I was told 5-6 month wait for a new one. I can wait, but a lot of people aren't in that position.

Dealers are charging above MSRP too so there is no set profit cap on new either.

Dealerships not taking advantage of the current supply situation are few and far between, but they are out there! after contacting nearly every dealer on the CO front range, I found one that was selling at MSRP and had an incoming allocation. Got it a couple months ago and now I am even happier that I only had to pay MSRP.

Yup, that's probably a major part of what it is. I could wait too; placed a deposit in July, truck arrived this month.

A few years ago, this was just an upsell push by the dealership. Now? It's a legit reaction to the ongoing supply shortages that puts all the power in the seller's hands. If you want to sell AND they can get you a new one, then it's the best time to do it, period.

This new car shortage isn't working itself anytime soon, and dealer lots are sitting empty. If you drive a desirable lightly used vehicle (and the Tacoma certainly qualifies) it is probably worth nearly the new price.

    Traded it in.
Last month I traded my 2020 Sport with about 28k miles in and was given what I paid for it. Its now listed for 5k over the original sticker price.
