    I asked. But.........

Don't have one. Don't want one. Wasn't 'defending' the truck, arrogantly or otherwise.

I just think when someone is dropping over 30 large on something there are many things they should know in advance, much of which is revealed by test driving.

If you think its slow now keep it stock. after 600+ lbs of armor/gear and 33" tires the truck wont even want to start moving from a stop. No problems running in the fast lane without holding up traffic on the highway or easily going the speed limit on side streets once I'm moving.

Unless I can test drive something for 6 months and camp with it, communte from TN to TX with it for hours on end, drive in in the cold, in the summer heat, a test drive just let's you get in a vehicle with a salesperson chatting you up.

In the flatland I lived in, the truck was fine. After a few months I took it to the hills. I then discovered 6th gear didn't exist in the truck. I discovered the Cruise was "interesting."

I took it home after purchasing from a dealership. Discovered my carseat fit fine in it, as long as the passenger seat was all the way up in the dashboard.

I bought in August. We start camping around October. We got a chance to camp.

The 12V Fridge Freezer doesn't fit in it well. I towed my adventure trailer, it hunted like crazy.

I'm not putting you on blast, it's really not you at all, please take no offense. I'm just showing why the argument of "did you test drive it" is kinda pointless.

The elevator pitch of the 3rd Gens is great. It looks GREAT. It's livability was a giant sacrifice. The same could be said for Jeeps. After my kid is out of a car seat, and if I went in with the knowledge of regearing is essential, I would really enjoy a 3rd Gen, but by the time that happens, 3rd gens will be a distant memory.

To be clear, I really like 3rd gens. My Quicksand was awesome color. Offroad it was awesome (and yes I wheeled it). Unfortunately it's not a family vehicle, and I made the mistake of banging out of kiddo.

How could the 450HP Raptor be excluded from any list of hot trucks? :D

Was it fast when you bought it and magically slowed down after you left the dealership?

Coming from a 600+ rwhp Shelby, I would most definitely say that the 3G Tacoma is not slow. It is plenty powerful for its intended purpose.

If the AT wasn't so craptastic in the 3rd gen it would go a long way toward helping out. Somehow even with ETC on the truck is somehow always in the wrong gear.

    Regarding family vehicle.
Compared to my 4Runner or the F150 it's not even remotely close if you're big and or tall. Take a 9 hour road trip with your knees in the dash.

Meanwhile the 4Runner has much more rear legroom, and that means my kid and wife can sit comfortably with a car seat. My dog and ride behind me.

Can you make it work? Sure.

In fairness, it's not designed to be. It's designed for it's intended purpose. Mid sized truck. And it does a really good job of doing that. For the record, it's the transmission in my opinion more than the engine. Sure the power comes on late and low end torque isn't there, but in 4LO you can't really tell the difference.

It towed better than my 2nd gens. It really towed pretty well honestly for a truck in it's size class. It towed better than my 4Runner too, and that's got the 4.0L which has a good bit of low end grunt but goes flat on higher RPMs, that's where this truck shines.

Most of my friends drive Tacomas, and all of them with kids eventually bought something bigger, or a 4Runner as their family transport.

Edit: Sorry to argue. I'm on a Tacoma forum. And I love Tacomas. I'll back off.

I wouldn’t be so insecure about it. We know it’s an anomalous opinion that’s shared by the minority.

    Test drive pointless? Not really.

Not a family car? I grew up with a brother and the 4 of us sat across a bench seat of a regular cab truck. My mom drove a 2 door blazer.

The tacoma works fine for families but some people want more.
