Well, I was on the 101 on Saturday in some pretty nasty rain and found myself in an unrecoverable hydroplane. Went sideways and took out some metal box on the side of the highway.
I'm taking it to a shop today to get appraised for my insurance. I have a couple of questions.
Based on the damage, is there ANY chance at all that this could be totaled due to all of the cab damage alone?
Also, is it odd that the airbags didn't deploy? I was doing about 55mph when I lost traction, and I sent that box (which was mounted to a concrete base) about 15 feet. I found it odd that there was that much damage to the side of ther truck with no airbags.
Thanks for any insight, and wish me luck with the insurance process!

That doesn't look too bad, the doors might be color matched and replaced? :notsure:

Bummer about the accident, no chance it’s totaled. Find a good shop and get it repaired.

Not totaled...by a long shot. Maybe $8-9k in damage at most.

Looks like it’s not totaled, appears as though no airbags were needed... those things sure are “smart”.

That sucks. Does not appear to be a total, rocker & doors truck is worth too much...would recommend getting plastic covering that back window to stop more moisture in the truck

I had similar damage and they replaced both doors. I think it will get fixed hopefully no frame damage. It is boggling that the side airbags never deployed.

Man that hurts to see. Hope you can get it fixed easily. Just curious, what tires are you running?

Well you got the first one under your belt. Glad everyone is ok.

Doesn't look like the truck should be totaled out. I wonder how much Rock sliders would have helped.

I haven't looked into it too much. I know that the front door won't open, and that crease on the back door extends up into the roof a couple of inches. I was wondering if there my be some warping to the B pillar. The frame looks alright at a brief inspection, but the alignment is way off.
I have my fingers crossed for it to be totaled because of how well Tacoma's hold their value, I could probably get a new one for the KBB value of it, currently. I'm not holding my breath though, just thought I'd ask what you all thought...

I have to say this all the time. If you walk away from an accident where the airbags didn't deploy, you didn't need the airbags and they shouldn't have deployed.

Also, there is a nice cardboard, plastic bag, and duct tape temporary window installed at the moment.
Again, I haven't climbed under the truck yet, but the frame itself, from ther outside, looks alright.

do you think that the tires were the culprit in the hydroplaning?

SRS curtain airbags deploy typically on roll over, not always with a side hit.
I don’t think its odd they didn’t deploy.

No I don’t think the truck will be totalled out.

I have no experience with the stock tires, nor am I a "hydroplaning expert" but I do know that your tires are whats on the road so they are whats goes sliding when you hydroplane. I've ran Nitto Terra Grapplers on all my trucks and (knock on wood) I've never hydroplaned. And I am from South Louisiana so I drive in rain all the time.

My frame was damaged, cut out the damaged section and welded it back in and they didn’t total mine. Total was about $11k
