Airbags use a change in velocity factor to calculate deployment...hitting a box didn’t do much in that area.

Airbags rear. Wheels. Roof rack Armor lid.Lightbars and bull bar.battery bank and 2nd inverter.geo fence and tracker.

curtains didnt deploy good. The accudent didnt trigger the needed protection of your airbags.
If there is pillar damage .....not good...even uf its puny.

Typically air bags and pillar damage or either make it totaled. Insurance companies are quite happy totaling your vehicle.

Really? I have been running Terra Grapplers since 2014, all over the country in every situation I can think of. I've towed, been off road, drove through snow and rain, some while towing, literally been in every driving condition that I can think of and I've never once felt like I lacked control.

Ouch. Same color truck as mine. Ins. will not total it unless you have over 2/3 the value of vehicle in damage. Was there anyone sitting in passenger seat? Air bag is controlled by seat switch. As for hydroplaning they say you only have one inch of tire on the ground when hydro no matter how wide tire is. Good thing is your truck protected you. Good luck with ins.

No one in the passenger seat. That was the kind of information I was looking for. I have my appraisal appointment within the hour. We'll see how it goes.

I run same tires in Seattle metro. Tires are fine on wet roads. Hell, the are fine in the snow and icy conditions.
Speed vs road conditions is the reason..
Most likely SR5 suspension plus all above helped sending truck into the wall.
That thing reacts weirdly to bumps, gaps and other road impurities on dry road.

Just like getting a bad haircut, If you do not get your truck repaired properly, you will have no one to blame but yourself.
You can choose to have it fixed anywhere you want. Choose wisely.

Ps. I hope you have adequate PD coverage. You will be surprised at how much the county is going to get you for on that box.

Yea, no chance on a total there, looks very much fixable to me. Glad your ok though. I drive in the same weather. It's scary out there, not just to us but those who decide to go full retard even for a drop of rain.

I think the one thing that might push it towards a total is the damage to the roof.

It could be and I agree with you on that. I don’t know what the threshold is on roof damage though as it’s a structural support. What do I know though, they replaced the back 1/4 of my frame and didn’t total it out.

Idk who did that, but it’s a huge no-no
You’ve got the illustration from the TIS so you can see that’s UHSS

Toyota did it and authorized the repair. As long as the welds didn’t exceed a set temperature for specific period of time. Trust me, I had a shit ton of concern over it all but was assured that it’s normal and that the tech who was completing the repairs was certified by Toyota to conduct the welding and repair to the frame.

That was me. I remember doing that weld. That was my first day at that internship.

    ...stuff
I ran nothing but KOs for about 11 years on all of my 4x4s. 3 4Runners and a Nismo Frontier, and my pops has them on is second gen. They were fantastic in my home environment of desert and rocky terrain. With that said, KOs are absolutely terrible in rain and snow. I had to launch out of a parking lot using momentum because my tires couldn’t grip the 6foot hill getting out of the parking lot up to the road.
I am a recent convert to terra grapplers and my god.... they are so much better. KOs have the “bro-cool” factor so everyone runs them, Hell my coworker had them on his Subaru. But when it comes to a Better performance on rain and snow, and still great traction in dirt and out in the desert, I am all about the Nittos now. I want to try to ridge grapplers as my next set.

OP, airbags are expensive. They have solid gold wiring. (No joke, no other metal can pass electric current fast enough for deployment except gold.) the airbags only go off if absolutely necessary. If the airbag won’t help you because the forces are going the wrong way, they won’t go off, which will leave them available for a secondary collision that does have the correct forces. Having an empty seat is also a good reason for that airbag to not go off.

Not saying you are wrong by any means...but I’m master certified by Toyota, and have been to all of the collision training, and nowhere would they ever endorse sectioning a frame, let alone one that is 980mpa

They don’t even sell a replacement for the “back 1/4 of the frame” which means it would have had to come off a used frame, and they would never endorse that either.

They will allow you to replace the very rear crossmember however, so I’m hoping your just mistaken about what they actually did to it...
