I have a 2009 tacoma that I replaced the left cv axle in yesterday while replacing the diff needle bearing with the ecgs bushing. My plan was to reuse my old cv unless the inner shaft looked messed up. Well I managed to separate the cv joint getting grease everywhere and mangling the inner boot.. I had a reman cv from napa in case, so I installed it. It looked the same dimensions as the oem one and I double checked the part number.

Problem is when installing it seemed too short, and it looks like the inner boot is really being stretched with it all back together and on the ground. Looking again the inner boot is definitely longer than the oem one. Is this the "price" you pay for using reman cheap axles?? Both axle ends mached up fine so I assume it's the right part. I can grab the shaft and push it towards the diff and it wants to pull right back. This is causing about a 1/8 gap between the inner dust seal the diff face. I was thinking of loosening the boot at the middle shaft? I don't really want to take it apart again but I can't see the inner boot lasting with it stretched out.

When ordering CVs that are re-man'd - order two, check the both out and I will put money on it that one will be way better than the other. EG: missing dust covers, grooved seal surface, etc.

I have a custom made axle with OE inner and outer but I have found that one side 'needs' a 3/4" longer to ensure it doesn't pop out of the tripod end of the axle when wheeling with hard turns.

I worked a deal with them for a few and I got mine a while ago. I know they had issues sourcing cores a while back because guys like me never returned them

It used to be about $85 for the reman cv and a $75 core charge. I would guarantee they are more expensive now though.

Give them a call. they sometimes have them in stock ready to ship same day. I dealt with Steve and he was great. You can also get upgraded boots. Like I said though it was a while ago...

And they will also install new OEM boots for about 80 each.

hey shouldn't you be eating :D

I didn't upgrade my boots because I never tore a stock one....I'm not lifted so never wore on them much. The normal boots they give you look good in my spare parts room, but no idea how they hold up yet.

I got them to do a set for me with high angle boots, they are great to work with and very fast.

IIRC it was less than 300 for both sides. I'll see if I can get the invoice from the garage tomorrow. I've been very happy with them.

Hey, I'd sure appreciate that :0)
How often do you wheel or off-road? And how much lift do you have up front?

It was 94 per side. Plus 75 For a core charge you will get back upon returning the old one, plus shipping. Find out what boots you want (Toyota, CVJ boots, or I opted for CVJ's high angle boots). They can do the boot slide for you too. Just ask about clamping the boot a bit higher. They know...

Hey, thanks a lot. I'm wondering if it matters that my truck is a 2nd Gen though.

Thank you for your response...I appreciate it. It seems that most people who were posting in both threads had 1st Gens as well. So, I wasn't too sure what to do. I have a trip coming up in late June and need to get this fixed before we go.

Forgot to answer your questions. How much do I wheel... Not too much, but I have plans to do more. I have a two year old son and a two week old daughter. I'd like to do some trips in a few years. I have family in the four corners area, a sister in Durango, CO. Plans for a Moab trip in 2016...plenty of time to prep.

I hear ya, I have a 6 year old and my truck is my DD so...I don't want too many complications. I'll be calling CVJ and placing an order with them today I think.
    Thanks again
