My dad was a master tech at toyota, now has his own shop for 10 years (he thinks he's smarter than the toyota engineers). I gave him my 2020 tacoma and he started putting 30w10 instead of 0w20 to save money and i told him (0w20 doesn't even cost more than 20 bucks if you really hurting for money i'll buy it) he blantly refused. He complains that he only gets 9 mpgs (it's lifted on 33s) and a couple weeks ago, the engine crapped out and he blamed me. Trying to figure out if it were the oil or maybe something else. But if it's not the oil he's going to try to make me pay for the rebuild. Is the engine going out pre 50k miles a common thing on the tacoma or could it be (maintenance issues)?

I'm confused, is it your truck or his? If he's the one that made the decision to put in the wrong oil, even after corrected, that's 100% on him.

Still under warranty, so it doesn't matter.

It's mine, but he uses it/"maintains" it. Since i've been out of country, i left it in his hands.

I think you meant 10W30. But yes. That is way to thick of oil. And in cold weather it would be too thick to pump through the super tight bearing clearances. And would wipe out the bearings.

    What?

Not sure what you are asking but one oil change with 10w30 didn't cause the engine to blow up.

    What happened to the engine?

That makes sense, I should've put two and two together.

I car sat/drove my in-laws car for half a year and maintained it as well. At the end of the day, it's not my car, it's theirs. I ran all maintenance decisions by them and handed them back the keys to a clean, well maintained vehicle. I'd expect nothing less from your dad too. It's one thing to make a decision to use the wrong oil on your own car, but to use it on someone else's car and then ignore their request to use the correct oil is absurd. Now, I'm not saying that that's what caused it, but at 50k miles the engine shouldn't be failing as long as it's had routine oil changes.

I'd find a new dad. And then find a new truck.

If Toyota investigates and finds out about the wrong oil, they will deny the warranty claim.

It is a thicker oil but it not that drastic to cause the pump to starve to engine of oil lol.

These motors should have no issue running 10w30 even in cold weather.

This sounds like a healthy relationship.

Rebuild it and keep it away from him from now on.

    Rod knock, then
It's had multiple problems, such as rod knock and overheating, so my dad deemed it a POS. It finally blew a headgasket and warped the heads. Not sure what i'm going to do. I don't want to pay for the repair, if it is under warranty and there is no way the dealership can test the oil, i might be in the clear

It still falls under warranty since the factory powertrain warranty is 5 years/60k miles. Whether or not they'll be able to tell about the oil, I have no idea. Best of luck with everything.

Engineers are smart, if they call for a thin oil it's because the oil system needs that to maintain proper lubrication in the design. It's just that simple. Don't tell them what oil was put in it, it's unethical but it is what it is. It had oil and was maintained...technically.

How the fuck do you blow the head gaskets warp heads and get rod knock in a 30-40k truck. Is the dude made of money? None of this makes any sense.
