Mines purring just fine with the 5w-30 I put in it last month.
Me thinks OP bud forgot to fill it up with oil, and is looking for a scapegoat.

Let's make one thing clear, the engine supports all those oil types stated in the other countries manuals. The reason the US one doesn't state anything higher than 0w20 is due to EPA regulations for squeezing out the best economy. That's why they strongly tell you to go back to 0w20 after using 5w20 temporarily in case you can't find the synthetic 0w20.

The engine is perfectly ok with other viscosities as long as you operate it within the valid temperatures for that viscosity as stated in the manuals for countries with less fuel economy regulations.

I totally disagree with this post. OP has proven with science that you can’t put in non spec oil or your truck will blow up.

Why hasn’t anyone asked if he is rubbing running 33’s?

Uh... go back and read that page of the Mexican manual that everyone is quoting. Use google translate if you have to.

0W-20 is still the preferred oil for the engine, even in Mexico. The text says that running a higher viscosity is ok IF you don't run the truck in "very low temperatures" (muy bajas). But again, its a pedantic argument. If both manuals agree that the ideal choice is 0W20, and 0W20 is readily available to you, AND the 'Murican dealers will absolutely yank your warranty if they find out you are deviating from the "Murican service manual, then why run anything but?

But, you know, do what you want to yours. If you feel like adding a tablespoon of vanilla extract to it, go right ahead. :cookiemonster:

Interesting to see what happens if filling the engine with 6 qts of 140 gear oil.

 I just realized I made cookies last night and forgot the vanilla extract.

As much as this thread is a joke, I actually did make cookies last night and forgot the vanilla. Well, I made the dough. Vegan dough so I can snack on it (no eggs, next time I'm doing w/ butter but no eggs instead). No vanilla.

Anyway. Troll thread or not I think we the neandarthals have concluded that nobody can agree on what oil is necessary, and if there will be problems, BUT that it doesn't grenade the engine? I think?

Except the part where it says a higher viscosity may be a better choice for for high speed or high load conditions, right?

Yeah this guy's engine definitely did not grenade from oil grade. But it's such a tangled incoherent mess of a story that the true cause is unknown.

I still say it's the weird family dynamic. Munchausen by Tacoma.

putting 10w30 will not kill the engine right away, but wear out the oil pump over time. at first the pressure would be higher at first but with the pump wearing overtime the pressure will go back down and be insufficient and the engine will start to wear prematurely

Maybe the engine was low on oil in the first place (or no oil at all), OP heard some valve tapping, thought to put in some thicker oil, kept this up for a while but kept burning oil due to bad valve stem seals (which OP also forgot to mention), and he eventually blew a rod but was too embarrassed to say that so he made up the story about his dad and the head gasket.

This may or may not have actually happened to me with my first car when I was 17 (minus the dad part)…..

Well this was a wild ride this morning.
