Lol, no. Up to 15W-40 is fine. I’ve been running 10W-30 for 12K. Runs beautifully.

I gave him my 2020 tacoma and he started putting 30w10 instead of 0w20 to save money and i told him (0w20 doesn't even cost more than 20 bucks if you really hurting for money i'll buy it) he blantly refused. He complains that he only gets 9 mpgs (it's lifted on 33s) and a couple weeks ago, the engine crapped out and he blamed me.

lots of drama up in those two sentences.

If he was a master tech, this is exactly why I don’t take my truck to the dealer for oil changes. Imagine what non “master techs” do.

I would argue 10W-30 is way too viscous for even warm weather in a modern engine, and by that I mean the 10W part, not the 30 part. If your mechanic had said he preferred 0W-30 I'd be like, "Well, okay, probably won't make much of a difference either way, but 10W-30, nope, the guy is an idiot."

Well, you don't have to worry about me telling them, bc I could care less, and it doesn't come out of my or my company's pocket; but you just told the entire internet, including people in this thread that work at dealerships. Good luck with it. Not saying it'll go one way or the other, but honesty goes a long way, even if it costs you to tell the truth.

And we all wonder why Toyota is so tight about warranty stuff, people are probably trying to screw them all the time.

Yeah, this one is a clear cut case. Warranty denied. Aftermarket parts and wrong oil. Won't be hard to solve this one.

The Mexico owner's manual approves 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, and 15W-40 for use in the 3.5L 2GR-FKS. The engines are all the same coming from the same plant in the US.

The only exceptions to those viscosities is they don't recommend 10W-30 below 0F and they don't recommend 15W-40 below 10F.

I don't know why people keep quoting the Mexico Service manual. That is for MEXICO, Different climate. Warmer temps then the majority of North America. Just because you can use something is a sub tropical/tropical climate, doesn't mean you can get away with it in a Temperate climate.

It's like saying, you can wear shorts and flops in Mexico year round, so you can do it in Canada too in January without risk of frostbite.

Lol, they give a temperature range, even in Mexico. As long as you stick to that, you're good.
