Irrelevant. The fact is 10W-30 is many orders of magnitude thicker when at any ordinary non-operating temperature than a 0W or 5W oil, and it will cause issues with the tight tolerances of these modern engines. For Mexico, where with the exception of some of the higher altitudes, the OAT rarely drops below 50°F, a 10W-30 might work out okay, but even in Mexico only an idiot would put 15W-40 in their engine.

You know that shop that your neighbors get wide-eyed and stonefaced when they talk about it; the one where you weren't even talking cars, but just out of the blue the conversation steers to "whatever you do, don't go to that shop." The one that everyone in the neighborhood has at least five bits of gossip on, but nobody will admit to bringing their car there. That shop.

This is what happens when you are related to that shop.

and the reason is to "save money" yet now he has to rebuild the engine?! doesn't make any sense.

If Mexico rarely goes below 50°F, then why would they specify that 10W-30 is safe at 0°F and 15W-40 is safe at 10°F? Is the Toyota information then irrelevant to Mexican owners too?

The logic here doesn’t track. They don’t decide things based on weather not ‘usually’ being below a certain temp. They tell you what is safe to run in a given temperature range. That doesn’t change no matter what country you’re in.

With your logic, 5W-20 and 5W-30 aren’t safe either because they’re only on the Mexican manual and not on the US manual (other than the 5W-20 disclaimer saying you can run it for 5K miles and then must go back to 0W).

None of this thread makes sense, don't worry. Someone who owns their own shop, a master tech for years, decided to continue driving a supercharged truck with the wrong oil, after hearing rod knock, overheating, and blown head? And OP thinks he'll just wheel it into the dealership and they won't ask any questions, or simply pop the hood.

We all clearly know that the 10w30 didn’t blow up this truck. There is way more to this story that makes no sense that is not being told

I think you're wrong here my man. An order of magnitude means 10x, so 2 OOM is 100x, and so on. No way 10w-30 is 100x thicker than any 0w oil

I agree 10w30 is too thick for modern engines with ultra close clearances, but to blow it? That seems unlikely to me. It obviously depends on a multitude of factors. I suspect there is much more at play here thats not being said or is being hidden from the OP by his old man.
You/HE clearly blew the head gasket from overheating, so Id want to know what in the heck he was doing to the truck BESIDES the oil. Sounds like he was beating the absolute shit out of it.

It gets well below 50 degrees in Mexico - in both the desert at night and in the mountains. Just sayin'.

Also, OP it seems from your post history that you also have a '94 Hilux stateside as well?

You guys are arguing about oil in Mexico.

Lifted on 33s, dealer would deny right there.

Plus OP is a corporate Ford Maverick marketing troll.

Heavy foot and supercharger could have something to do with it.
