Unless the tacoma is in mexico? Than the oil flows better in the same temp range?

Don't trust everything you google. Especially when what you find is not application specific. 10w30 didn't blow up the motor lol.

The problem is that with the tight tolorances in modern engines the 10w30 will not lubricate the bearings properly and they will spin, blocking the oil journal, wish will intern cause it to seize. DO NOT put 10w30 in for extended periods.

FYI, if this is the same page I posted its for a gr2-fks taco. Also I don't think toyota sells the I4 tacoma in mexico, they market the hilux there and if the want the I4 in a pickup you get the hilux instead.

So does the Mexico Tacoma have different Specs to allow for thicker oil?

Actually I'm an ASE Master Tech, VW Master Tech, BMW Level 2 Certified tech, and currently a Toyota Expert Level Certified Tech. I have over 20 years experience. And have a little knowledge in the automotive field. And have had more engine classes then 90% of the key board warriors on here. So you are correct. I'm just another "Google mechanic"

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
Mexico is closer to the equator. Lower latitudes, larger effective diameter of the planet there, more rotational speed helps pull the oil into those tight tolerance bearings. Engineers considered this. That's the real reason oil gets thinner as you go north.

Couldn’t tell you. What I can tell you is that there’s a reason they require 0w20 and it’s not to get you to spend more money.

So the engines are the same as the US, same plant same tolerances. So the thicker oil will not damage bearings (provided you stay in the temp range), there is a reason but that's not it.

The problem is the statement of an engine "requiring" 0W-20. Why does it require it here, but not in Mexico? They're the same engine. That is why the Mexico argument is brought up. Same damn engine, the Mexico manual gives the Mexican owners a specified safe range of viscosities to use in specified temperatures, as long as you stick within those temps, you are good no matter where you operate the engine. SO, you can use 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30 at any temp, and you can use 10W-30 for 0F+, and you can use 15W-40 for 10F+.

It really is that simple. Mexico is not as strict on CAFE requirements, nor do they have as many rules, so what is suggested or "allowed" to be used as oil there is more lenient than what they'll put in the owner's manual here.

There are not "ultra tight clearances", "ultra tight tolerances", or whatever else anyone wants to say to suggest thicker oil won't "fit" in the engine components. At one point, a smart feller on this forum pointed out the main bearing clearances of the 2GR vs the bearing clearances of I believe a 1GR motor from 1991 that had the same bearing clearances (2GR might have actually been larger?) and that older motor used 10W-30 or 5W-30 depending on climate.

Also, if you look at the Mexican manual and convert the wording, it says that only ILSAC SN is required down there. the ILSAC GF ratings are likely for fuel economy/CAFE here as well, hence why they are not "required" in Mexico either. Now, I do think GF ratings are good to stick to, because at least the latest ones, have additives that are supposed to help with timing chain wear.

Toyota manual actually doesn't "require" anything, they only "recommend" stuff.

Stop with the tighter tolerance googled BS.

Take a look at a main bearing clearance spec from a modern Toyota 3.5 and pick any 20 plus year old Toyota engine. They either the same or almost the same. Plenty of these old Yota motors will run on 20w50 no issue and had a recommended oil weight of 5w30 or 10w30.
