Cool. I actually got a guy locally that has one that I could most likely get for cheap. The only thing that the driver side part where it connects to the shifter portion is cracked. You think I could maybe get away with just one screw on that portion or maybe try to make a brace or something to compensate for the crack?

I'm going to Augusta tomorrow. I'll look in the junk yard they have a few 1st gen Tacoma's and 4Runners and I'll see what they have. You pay shipping and price for part and it'll be yours if they have one. It'll be about $18 for the part plus shipping. That one bolt will only look bad it won't screw with it being sound I don't think.

I'd pass. Because that also secures the trim around the shifter.

Would look terrible and you'd have two pieces not secured all the way

Madjik_Man, Do you remember if it was easy to remove the 98-00 console and install the 01-04 console? I'm trying to figure out if it would be necessary to have the seats removed in order to get to those two screws that unfortunately happen to be where my screwdriver can't fit :embarassment:

No need to remove the seats at all. It's super easy. On a scale of 1-10 it's a 0.

Underneath the console(s) there is a bracket. The bracket is held on to the console with two screws (in question) and then bolted (two bolts) into the body.

I know of those two screws (one on each side) that you are speaking of. My 98-00 did not actually have screws in there, but all they are for is to secure the console to the bracket better than just the two bolts. And the new-to-me 01-04 console didn't have screws in there either.

So all you have to do is unbolt the unit from the body (inside the console cubby) and remove the two screws in front of the cup holders that go through the shifter trim as well. Then the whole thing will come out.

When you get your new console be sure that it comes with the bracket as well. I'm sure most TW members are fully aware of this if they are selling, but you might run into someone who just has the console and no bracket.

The bracket for our 98-00 console is different in shape than the respective one for the 01-04. So I am assuming you cannot swap brackets and make it work. IIRC I remember just lining up the 98-00 bracket with the 01-04 console and thinking, "that ain't gonna work." But the holes in the body line up perfectly with both brackets - so the install of an 01-04 console w/bracket is super easy.

Hope that helps. PM me anytime if you have any other questions. I have some pictures of everything taken apart if you need visuals too.

I also noticed in the 2nd pic of the OP - that console is missing the two rubber pibs that insert into those two holes on either side of the lower cubby door.

You can buy these from the dealer for $1 or $2 a piece (or maybe find something at a local hardware store). Without those in place the plastic of the upper cubby tub will "rattle" against the plastic of the lower cubby. Plus the angle of the armrest ends up being just slightly off (granted my OCD amplifies it, but...). If your console doesn't come with those and you end up saying, "meh fack it... it's not worth the cost" you could always slightly overtighten the slider mechanisms that hold the upper cubby to the main part of the console. If you overtighten the bolts on those mechanisms it makes lifting and lowering the upper cubby slightly harder thus lowering the chances of it slightly "bouncing" up and down when lowered fully.

    Just another FYI

Wow I was just at a junk yard on Friday and saw a few 01-04 but went there to get mustang parts with a friend of mine, so I didn't even check em out. They looked pretty complete though
