i was thinking about that, because smoking hookah emits no odor or 2nd hand effects, that I know of, except to the user. I'd be down to have a hookah on my desk at work to smoke

fast food and coffee dont cause lung cancer:rolleyes: yea fast food is not good for you but depending on your lifestyle its not nearly as bad as smoking.

you can eat fast food and work out and be fine.
you can smoke and work out and still get lung cancer. or should I say "will get"?
and yes caffiene is addicting but coffee is a staple in nearly every workplace in the US.

I'm guessing that GE pays part of your health care costs no?? Why should they be forced to bear the extra burden for folks who smoke??

And it's not any sort of terrible argument...You are not forced to have that job. Once you sign on to follow their rules, you have to follow their rules. They don't say you can't smoke ever, just not a work.

Not to mention the fact that smokers get all sorts of breaks that I don't...so I could care less if they have the "right" to light up at work taken away.

You are forgetting that nobody has ever got heart disease from a second hand Big Mac. I have never had someone blow their Big Mac in my face.

Its their propery, they make the rules. Just like this site, you don't own it. You don't make the rules.

They did the same thing where I work.
At first people smoked anywhere. Then they put up designated smoking areas. Then they decided to make the entire site smoke free. Well, guess what?
They don't own the street, the city does, so people now go smoke on the sidewalk. There is not a damn thing that our company can do about it. So, even if your work site is large, the smokers can just drive to the end of GE's property and smoke an entire pack if they so wish.

    FYI -I don't smoke.

"fast food and coffee are unhealthy too, is that the next step?"

your eating a big mac doesn't cause the people around you to get second hand smoke related cancer.

So, if I ban people from smoking in my house and truck am I infringing on their rights? There is no right in the constitution to smoke that I'm aware of.

But, I think GE is being a little excessive. Perhaps make it more uncomfortable but whatever, it's their company they can ban it if they feel so inclined.

Having the site smoke free is better than having the entire site and company pay more health insurance cost? Can you even argue a point to where smoking and paying more for insurance is better?

where do work? you guys have staff assaults and riots? you must be in a prison or a psych hospital or something.

not true. how these things affect everyone is different. for example, my moms dad died of lung cancer at 45. my grandmother smoked every day of her life and lived to be 92 and died of Alzheimer's, not cancer. while we can all agree that smoking greatly increases your risk of cancer, its not guaranteed. on top of that, second hand smoke studies are notoriously skewed. plus, once again, if the smoking area is a hike from non smokers (like on our site), its not even an issue. yes, coffee is a staple of every workplace, but at this site, so is tobacco. this is the largest wind turbine manufacturing site on the planet. all the floor workers are rednecks that smoke like a chimney. we have 3 buildings dedicated to engineers. if you know anything aobut engineers you know they smoke 9 to 13 packs a day on a slow day. i cant believe this hasn't cause a riot yet. as i said, i dont smoke but if i did i'd be in HR right now raising hell.

i'm a contract employee, so GE pays zero of my healthcare. only about 20% of the site is employed by GE, the rest of us are contractors. its cheaper htat way (specifically, because they dont have to pay for our healthcare and 401k stuff). your argument is like the anti gay marriage argument i hear here in the bible belt. "if those gays wanna get married they can just move to another state!" i hate that argument. sure its easy for hte non gays to say that, but how easy is it for gay couples to actually do that? if you were a smoker your opinion would be completely different. just like if these anti gay marriage folk were gay they'd be singing a completely different tune. personal prejudices (whether sexual or otherwise) should not be allowed to negatively affect another persons life.

i couldn't agree more. although i'm a huge supporter of capitalism, the company's shouldn't be able to make decisions like this for their employees. "you're gonna be healthy even if it kills you!!!"

the concern is not second hand smoke, which was not mentioned in the email. but an attempt to improve the health of all employees. if i wanna slowly kill myself tahts my right.

^^This, plus, the money saved by all the smokers not taking multiple unwarranted breaks translates into more profit for the company, which translates into better job security for all, and hopefully better pay as well.

I believe USAA is a smoke free campus, but I am not sure.

Any of you old enough to remember when smoking was allowed on airplanes?

no kidding. my office mate is obsessed with fiber bars. even though i dont smoke, i would start if i could smoke inside jsut to cover up the smell of his rancid butthole

once again, second hand smoke is not the concern. htis is part of a plan that has been going on for years now to improve general employee health.

you are missing the point completely. yes smoking is bad for you. nobody is debating that. i dont like smoking. i hate the smell of cig smoke, and i hate the taste. but i hate the idea of losing personal freedoms more.

    what?!

dude, be realistic here. comparing a personal truck to a site that houses over 5000 employees doesn't even make sense. i do agree with making it uncomfortable. i dont care if htey put the smoking area 500 yards from the door. i dont mind the insane taxes. because with those two options you still have a choice. but banning it completely is like you said, going too far. hell, i wouldn't even care if they made employees clock out for smoke breaks. i think that would be awesome, the company wont pay for you to smoke but they also wont top you. but once again, there should be options.

yes i can, its called personal freedom. cant put a price on that

So if they change their reason for the ban to second hand smoke issues, then you would be OK with that? You have the right to slowly kill yourself, just not on their property.

They don't have to give a reason for banning anything.

GE is not telling their employees they have to be healthy. They are simply telling them they cannot smoke on their property. Just like some companies don't allow you to have a cell phone while at work. At my job they also have a grooming/heigene policy. Someone COULD get all riled up about how it's unfair that they have to keep well groomed and take a shower everyday so that they don't smell like ass, but that's the companies policy while at work. They aren't forcing you to stop smoking. They're enforcing their new policy that nobody may smoke on site.

Except for the part where people CHOOSE to smoke...and smoking infringes on other peoples air/time/life....where being gay does not infringe on anything except others sensibilities.

    Thank god we disagree again....
