The smell of a smoker IS a horrible odor, no joke, it makes me ill.

just because i'm not affected doesn't mean i dont sympathize with those that are. financially and constitutionally i'm a conservative, but socially i'm more libertarian. i'm not gay but i believe in gay marriage. i get scared when i see stuff like this. even though this doesn't affect me, the next decision they make for me might.

yup, thats why i'm so bothered by it. our site is hundreds of square acres, and there is no smoking anywhere on it, even in your car with the windows rolled up.

i will agree with you on that point. it doesnt make me ill but i do hate the smell of a fresh smoke.

My work does the Virgin HealthMiles program. http://us.virginhealthmiles.com/pages/home.aspx. They basically pay you for staying active and tracking your progress. Businesses don't want to pay the health expenses related to smoking and the long term health issues. It all comes down to money and maybe a little concern for their employees health.

"Personal Freedom"...a term you keep flying to try to justify your position. I say hogwash to that...sorry dude. Those in your company are still FULLY free to smoke...just not at COMPANY facilities. That still gives people about 15 hrs of "personal freedom" time to smoke the shit out of those stupid sticks. What the heck is wrong with that???

A hospital...University Hospital...here in El Paso announced this week they will no longer hire smokers. All current employees are grandfathered...but are being urged to quite...with free assistance. Of course it has more to do with the bottom-line than giving a crap about worker health...but it makes sense to do it for everyone involved.

I say...everybody else's personal freedom stops when it impacts others negatively. Like when I pay more for my insurance because another is obese, or smokes. Or like when I inhale cigarette smoke from others. If it were up to me...no smokes...anywhere!!! How is that for pushing my "personal freedom"?

Finally, I work in a small office of 21 persons. ONE of us smokes. He is the one that is hard to find because while the rest of us are working, he's taking one of his 15 smoke breaks a day out back. And when he comes back we all get to smell it on his breath and cloths. I say NO SMOKING at work is the right thing to do for all the others...a 20-1 ratio.

I hate how in this country these days the minority, on each issue, get to decide what the rest of us have to put up with.

nah, your posts didn't come off as "dickish". i'm ok with differing opinions, but i'm not ok with relative noobs talking down to me. actually, until this thread i didn't even have an ignore list. as i said, this wont affect me at all, i'm just worried aobut the next time they make a decision for me. i'm also interested to see how this works. it is suppose to be all GE sites. i dont know if thats just in the US or global, but its not jsut us.

Our site is the same way. I don't smoke, but yep people just take a break and go accross the street or for a drive when they do.

Obama smokes on the White House property, so I doubt he'd back a smoking ban on public property but IMHO its coming down the road in a couple years.

Dipping is cool at work, till somebody rats you out then your branded that you dip forever...

Insurance costs driven by Gov't plans and incentives will take most of the fun out of life pretty soon if things don't change. Glad I'll be old and probably won't give a shit.

Gasp!! If our company took away smoking entirely....the smokers will be lost & confused. They won't know where to go to get the most up to date gossip.

I can see it now.... smokers will take-up chewing gum and there will be wads of gum everywhere.

you work at a manufacturing shop dont you? these shop floor workers are going to have a hissy fit i imagine. they live from smoke break to smoke break.

smoke breaks take 5 minutes. but with the size of our site and parking lot, people will be taking 15 to 20 minute smoke breaks now. it takes a while to get out of the building and past security and through the Lake Ontario sized parking lot. i dont see this stopping the smokers, just making them more irritable and inefficient and deviant in their methods of satisfying their nic fit.

You got that right!!! Smoke break to smoke break. We're not supposed to allow them to take a 'smoke break' - so *they* got smart and ask to go to the bathroom instead. You can't deny someone from going to the bathroom. It's all a game....

How long do you think that'll last in your situation?

In my plant, if they prohibited smoking everywhere..... it wouldn't last 6 months. The Supervisors would get tired of enforcing it. When they stop enforcing it, it goes away. We call it, "Flavor of the Month".

i dunno. GE is pretty tenacious. i have a feeling it will be strictly enforced. of course they strictly enforce parking too but i have about a billion parking tickets.
