I'm not worried about that, I'd prefer if it was already ruined. The value to me is the light body and RWD, it's screaming for a 2GR or a 5.3

OOOOH or a Nissan VQ40 (thats actually my new first choice)

The 2J is cool but it's approaching caveman status. The VQ35 and VQ40 make me moist, with their piston oil squirters, open deck design, wide cam availability, stock options for supercharging and turbo as well as variable intake runners. 2J is heavy too and would really mess with the BRZs suspension and balance

One not-so-great advantage of the boxer platform is that they're short and wide, keeping the mass down low. Probably not a great advantage for the average Joe but back in Subarus rally prime it was probably the cats pajamas.

They dropped the ball with the 2.5's, but the 2.0l's and the new FA's seem to hold up well.

You take the advantages with the disadvantages I guess. Buy a Subie, might have some engine issues. Buy an Evo might have tranny/transfer case issues. Buy a 1st gen Tacoma, LBJ's might kill you.

True true, much rather have a Subie than a Mitsushitty. Mitsubishi is the Chrysler of Japanese manufacturers.

Dinosaur or not. Its till the best gasoline engine ever made as far as im concerned. My 7mgte form 1986 had oil squirters..lol

It is heavy. And expensive to own and build.

Fuckin engineers...why can't they just build shit right! :p

    Id still take your wrx..haha

What's the benefit of an open deck compared to a closed deck? I know the EJ guys like to to a closed deck when pushing lots of boost. I also fancy the VQ's pretty sweet v6.

It's a cooling advantage really, lots of flow to avoid hotspots. The VQ35 has gone through something like 5 iterations where the only changes were to the water jacket design to avoid hotspots in boosted applications.

Speaking of 1st gen LBJ's, what mileages are people generally replacing them at? Has anyone used the Moog front end rebuild kit or have an opinion on Moog parts? To this point my LBJ's look fine and I have virtually no play in the steering. But as I close in on 190k...

Holy fuck change those bitches ASAP!

i recommend and its generally accepted to do them every 80-100k. Same as a timing belt/water pump.

More if you abuse them a lot.

DO NOT use Moog LBJs. I had some and swapped to OEM and the difference in quality is night and day there.

OEM is worth it here. Trust me.

I'd have to look back through a mountain of paperwork, but I think they are original... I was hoping I could afford total chaos UCA's and better coilovers before I touched the front end again

Subies are prone to crack like shown. When making lots of power of course.

The IAG closed decks are good for something like 700+

Their shop car "V8 bait" makes 1000 and some change.

Man if those are orginial id want them changed asap.

Pretty easy to do. Id go look at them, if they aren't seeping a lot of grease you can probably wait till summer for your front end overhaul.

I'm familiar with the problem, but they're not leaking any grease to this point and at least 175k of that is highway and interstate miles and the truck still tracks really straight. Maybe this weekend...

Also that's not how you use the word jaded, at this point you're actually cautious, aware... etc. Jaded would be if you saw all these LBJ failures called it a normal event and went on to do nothing about it on your own truck

I tend towards paranoia anyway, it's going to be awesome going down the road waiting for the spindle to fold 90 degrees until I have a chance to replace them:goingcrazy:
