I was just going to say estwing as well. It's the only Hammer I will ever use again. Ive beat thousands of sticks in the ground with an estwing 4 pounder. The one piece design is awesome and it is vibe free. @Digiratus their axes have to be just as nice

If you're going to split more than two logs over 10" in diameter get a split maul. If you're doing more than three just tow a log splitter

 

Most of the time I'm not dealing with rounds. It is typically halves or quarters for the campfire. I do want to do kindling too.

If it's rounds, I'll let Ben and his maul and dull ax handle them.

If you ever have the "good fortune" of getting to split somewhere around 8 cords of firewood by hand in a single sitting, you'll find a new appreciation for hydraulics, internal combustion engines and other associated "magic".

I can't visualize a cord but I have had the pleasure of using a gas powered, hydraulic splitter. It was an 18' car trailer filled with 2 layers of >10" rounds. It was a decent workout just to keep the machine fed and stacking the quartered pieces. Cannot imagine ever doing something like that by hand.

 

A mathematical cord is 4' high, 4' wide and 8' deep. My memory might be embellishing the details...splitting wood by hand is work.

 

The last time I saw my grand father he had a bunch of split wood piles around his property. I eventually asked him why they were there and he said he found out you can buy a logging trucks worth of logs and they will drop them off. So he had them drop the logs around his property and split all of it by hand. Not sure how many cords it came out to but it was far more than I thought he could do. Hell not sure I would have survived it. It wasn't in one sitting but that is still impressive.

 

Agreed, I get so much of their junk at the returns counter at the Homeless Despot. Seriously poor quality control these days. I'd buy an Estwing @Digiratus

 

An axe needs to be hand forged with a hickory handle.

Husqvarna if you're on a budget, Gransfors Bruks if you want real quality.

 

I have had great luck with Husqvarna and Estwing, seriously good stuff and does come with a hickory handle on some models. Somewhere in my empire of junk I have a hickory handled Estwing framing hammer that would likely hold up to nuclear testing and being shot out of a tank.

 

The rule of thumb that I've heard widely disseminated is one semi of logs equals about 8 cords.

 

Also the average Wyoming household that relies on a wood stove as their primary source of heat, consumes approximately 2 cords a winter.

 

Got a few more interested in the cruiser . One wants to trade a 02 wrx with a handful of mods on it and 60k on a new jdm engine. Not going to lie. Half tempted to do the trade to have a little DD car for visiting Laramie.

 

Some of the reviews at Amazon reflect this also. Monte's review does not. He is quite pleased with his X15 Fiskar.

Do you think my local HD will have these? May have to see if I can see one before purchasing.

 

They'll have the hammer for sure if you want to see the quality, they will not have the axe or maul though. Probably have to go to a place like REI or Cabelas to find one in person.

 

Still holding out for cash .
