My truck started being all coy like an ignored girlfriend, I could tell she felt inadequate in the presence of "the clusters" 35's

 

I think the 100s are much more interesting than the 80s. Along with the drivetrain, quite a bit of interesting technology. Quite a bit more than my '02 Tacoma.

But it is crazy how much they are asking for low mileage 2003 models. I saw one ad for $33K for one with 45K miles on it. That is a lot of dough for a 14 year old vehicle.

The one I'm looking at is not low mileage by any means, but not high either at 172K. That is a 12K/year average.

 

It's a Toyota, as long as you're under 300K it's young. That said, I have been working on an 80s chevy and it is crazy what people on forums for that old truck are saying is average life for an engine. They are all happy about making it to 85K without major oil consumption issues and to make it past 125K without a rebuild was unthinkable.

 

Ha! Chevy trucks from that era were terrible for longevity. That was just about the time when the Japaneese auto industry came in and turned GMs world upside down.

 

I loves me some Chevys though. Still want a 73-80 Squarebody 2WD truck. The power a Chevy pushrod V8 can produce with little money toward parts is just impressive. The beater 83 S10 I've been working on with a buddy kept up with us pretty well at the offroad park on Sunday, I only had to winch him once. He was on a steep incline and even then the carburetor didn't act up.

 

Sounds like a good deal. But..what would you do with it? haha

8k for 172k seems really fair in light of the research I've done. People who can afford to buy and want to buy Landcruisers new seem to be the kind of people that were raised with a work ethic that involved taking care of their things. I'm sure there are exceptions, but on the whole I've seen many very well maintained 200k landcruisers. When you take into account that a new base model Landcruiser essentially starts at 80k, well... From what I've read you can slap a set of 33"s on a fjz100 with zero mods and the v8 has the power to sling 'em. Have yet to see any really attractive front and rear bumpers, but maybe with a call to @RelentlessFab ...

If you can get it in the Lexus version, prices are always less. The name "Land Cruiser" holds it's value for an assload of time, whereas, Lexus owners are a little more snooty and trade their shit in every 2 years to keep up with the Joneses. Lexus holds it's value for about 5 years and then drops like the loose girl at a frat party.

 

Kinda a lousy replacement. Too big and pretty top heavy with a tent on the roof.

My bike ain't worth 4k but I'd certainly trade it for that if he was interested. I'm looking for a bigger bike anyway.

I think it would be cool to have. Always wanted one. But you are right. Not super practical. With this LC, I could become more ben-like. Fill up the driveway with too many useless vehicles.

So I can make it home from Holy Cross or the Rubicon if things don't go well.

I was just reading about a non-SC'd 2nd gen who towed another 2nd gen on an 18 ft trailer home from Moab. Seems doable.

The Redhead and trailer is probably ~7,000 lbs.

IMO, the rare occasion you would absolutely couldn't make it home, wouldn't make owning a tow rig and trailer worth it.

 

I know of a couple of local guys who've recently replaced their 2nd gens with '04 GX470s and are in the process of lifting them. There is good aftermarket support for that out there.

It's interesting to note that even tho the LC100 and the GX470 share the same drivetrain in '03, the platforms are different. As an example, the LC has more ground clearance and better approach and departure angles. Not that that matters all that much. I am not looking for another rig to modify. I have the RedHead for that.
