How much work is it to convert 2wd tacomas to 4wd? I come across some pretty nice double cab prerunners that aren't beat to crap (for the obvious reasons of owning a 2wd truck). I know you guys have talked about it quite a bit.

Also, how capable are the older trucks with 2wd a rear locker? I never had to use 4wd for basic driving until I put mud tires on and even then it hasnt been bad.

nothing replaces 4wd..not even a locker. But for around town and all, be fine. Snow would not be fun. And normal dirt roads be fine too.

To do a 4wd conversion, you need a lot of shit. But not that hard. Need new spindles, front diff, cv axles, some hose, wiring, transfer case, front drive shaft and rear driveshaft.

    Lot of stuff..

    Lot of work too.

Haven't done the conversion for mine but I think it's straight forward. Put the diff in , change the spindles, wire in the ADD and add the transfer case.

As far a the locker goes it hurts more than helps when it's snowy or icey. Haven't tried off-roading in it yet though.

pretty much drop in and play. Hardest part will be dropping the tranny and bolting the tcase on..just cause they are big and heavy. Wiring won't be super fun but isn't hard either.
