Wyoming B.S. Thread

So who else is checking the torque on their U-bolts after reading this. I checked mine about a month ago, but will check them again as soon as I get home.

 

I'm gonna go throw a set on my cruiser just to check them. Also maybe I'll throw a torque wrench on the ones on the taco

 

Goose lake. SOS trip. We re did you leafs and I had done mine before the trip. On our way out i heard clicking from the rear. Checked the rear U bolts. After the bigger obstacle right by the lake I tightened them up and you checked yours to be safe and they were also loose.

Mine were also loose when we did the Magruder

 

I think I did it as i have the wrench out already.

 

Impressive lack of forethought and general lack of concern about somebody else's stuff right there, but hey you got it on video and got likes

 

I havent checked my ubolts in 2+ years... I have the megabeast ones from ruffstuff. The nuts are almost an inch tall and I red loctite them. And now they're practically welded on there with rust. Maybe I'll hook up to a stump with my axle this weekend and leterBUK. Probably get a ton insta likes! Then I can get a Ford 9"!

I just realized I was in the Wyoming thread ha, thought I was somewhere else...carry on haha

 

i had that happen to me in moab a few years back. luckily it happened in camp going 3 mph...wondered why my tire was rubbing the front of me fender while not flexing...on the rear axle. center pin broke and u bolts came way loose and the axle slid forward on one side


in other news, this last storm ripped the tarp off my boat...so now 2.5 weeks ahead of schedule i have to borrow a truck and make an emergency trip to idaho falls to drag it back so it doesent leak or something dumb

 

I’m like 1.5 years and have taken them on and off a few times. Blue loctite and never had issues with a proper torque wrench

 

no so much the nuts coming loose at it is the bolts stretching themselves.

 

Would like to see this in person. Kinda cool but impractical at the same time

tight is tight idk ive never had an issue or even found one loose. Like Marc said rust keeps them pretty still. Mine have a little love on them at all times but i have checked them in the past and they wouldnt even move but they always come off.

 

Found out why allpoo installed such a small bolt.

 

I've read several times in several places that u-bolts should not be reused. iirc, its the way the threads are cut into the metal rods. They deform when torqued to spec.

You guys can reuse yours if you want, but I treat them as throw away parts and always use new.

 

They're like headbolts to me, trash after one use

 

Good quality bolts of any type should have roll formed threads, not cut threads. If they are cut, you lose quite a bit of strength at the root of the threads, and they're probably cheap enough you can replace them often.

Quality u bolts are usually a high carbon alloy and the torque spec shouldn't be anywhere near the yield point. If the threads aren't damaged there is no reason you can't reuse them.

Agreed on the headbolts though, those are usually torque-to-yield by design.

 

What is that?

I usually replace them pretty often. Most the time they are bent anyways.

 

Did not know there was more than one type. Are the ones from Wheelers or Alcan the cheap ones or the good ones?
