looks cool. Data plan isn't cheap though i bet. Plus, I like how we get away from cell service as it is. APRS let folks know where we are. And yeah, our HAM setups don't give us 100% communication all the time still. But its not bad really all things considered.

I got the motor of igor put back together tonight! :woot: just have to do the radiator tomorrow and tranny cooler and fluid flush. Then bumper, fender, headlights, grill. ANd then tires.

Interesting but I don't see the advantage over an inReach. It is smaller and lighter which is always good but you still have to carry and power your phone for it to be useful. You're still limited to communicating via texting through a proprietary App, no email or web browsing. At an purchase price that is twice that of an inReach and message plans that are essentially the same I don't see the advantage. I already own an inReach though so I'm kinda biased ...

The data plan wasn't that bad actually. It was a month-to-month type as well so no contract. Could buy as needed. I think the unlimited was $50 but they also had a $15 one. Had to scroll down a bit to see the details.

That's kinda what I was thinking. For $15 you get 20 messages @160 characters each. It it truly is for emergencies only, that should be enough to have standing by.

yeah better than the Spot thing I used to have.

the thing justin talked about is nice though. All one unit. https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/

If the thing you had really was more of a hotspot that you come utilize your phone more with I think it would be handy.

It may only be a question of bandwidth right now. Who knows what the future holds. It seems like the concept has the potential to become a true hotspot.

Yeah I've experienced satellite internet before...suuuuccckkksss. Works in packets. So every like 10-30seconds the sat will receive and send packets. Im sure its better now though but not much I'd imagine.

InReach can go month to month, 10 messages a month is $15 (plus taxes, fees, etc.). InReach gets you for a $25 annual fee to have the option to go month to month. InReach has "free" messages which I use the most, so I rarely use my 10 messages. I typically turn my plan off in November after hunting season and back on again in April or May for summer.

The other thing is that they typically charge for both outgoing and incoming messages, so even a short "conversation" can chew up your message allocation pretty fast.

Someone had developed an App that forwarded email headers to the inReach. It used a lot of messages so it only really worked with the unlimited plan. Iridium got wind of it and shut it down for using excessive bandwidth. This is a small portion of the use on their network and doesn't make much profit compared to satellite phones and commercial satellite data terminals. There are options if you want data, but I wouldn't expect to see these opened up anytime soon.

yeah idk whats taking so long there. Or if its the app developers taking a long time. Usually when I ask something Bob makes it happen in like a day or week. What he did with the auto notifications. Took him 4 days

Thats where you went for vacation?

Yeah, new york is cool. I've always gone for events so I had something to do most the time and then wander around as I wanted at night which is fun. But yeah..concrete jungle for sure.

Back from my "vacation" from TW, I picked this up yesterday. A friend and customer of mine just had twins so something had to go. It was this '84, his '85 FJ60, or '04 Tacoma. After a few minutes of pump & jump, she fired right up and idled perfectly. Not bad for sitting for 4 1/2 years. So now I've got 3 older Toyotas, one of which will get towed to MT this summer to be my run around truck when I'm up there.
