Gents, need some advice. So I still want a camera for all the trips I take for work. Something entry level but that can take some decent shots but travel well in my truck 99.9% of the time.

So here is my scenario tho, I am going to buy a new cell tomorrow (old is shot) and the camera on it is no slooch (S9+ probs). Is a "entry" level camera still worth it to mess around with, or do you think the phone will handle it? Mostly thinking like the outdoor areas I go to, the rigs, occasional cars and coffee trip, and of course the pup.

Swung by best buy and looked and ranged from 400-650 for point and shoots. Not sure I need to get into swapping out lenses. I just flat out don't know enough.

    Couple examples from the cell:

    Damn.

Long travel is my game. I love that shit. So awesome.

Camera is worth it still as it'll shoot in RAW which opens up better editing.

However, if you dont' want to take the time to edit the photos, then not really worth it probably.

Check out the a6500 Sony. Small and very nice.

I like the idea of messing with the photos a little bit, but I know it would be a big minimum. Just don't really have the time for it at the moment. I'll check it out, appreciate the recommendation!

yeah cause you'd need an editor too. LightRoom is the best place to start for that.

Lol it looks similar to one of the ones I saw at best buy. Small and slim, was like 600 range.

I'd say wait and see how the S9 works for you. The phone cameras are pretty good and the Pro editor software on the phone gives you quite a few options to tweak your photos without going into Photoshop. If you want RAW some of the phones (my S7) will shoot JPEG/ RAW combos.

    Phones are getting increibly good.

However, the other thing is the lens. A real lens will always beat out the tiny plastic optic thing they call a lens on phones.

Honestly I think the S9 will probabbly do a well enough job. I just know there a few photos at a distance that a true camera would capture better.

Here's what I'd say, and a bunch of it matches with Monte @Blackdawg.

Up until our De-Tour trip last year (literally, about a year ago now), I used my phone for photos. It's a Google Pixel, which is still one of the best phone cameras out there today. I thought the photos were great, and I even said to Monte and @Digiratus, and the other guys on the trip that I thought the form factor made me a better photographer because it forced me to frame shots better ...since there's no zoom (there's only digital zoom, which is worthless).

But really, that's all a pile of crap. (which they of course told me on the trip and I didn't believe)

On that same trip, I also took my Canon 80D for the first time. Like the Sony Monte mentions, it's not cheap, but the photos out of it are SO much better (as long as you post process); everything in my adventure stories today is done with the Canon. I use the phone for one out of 100 shots at this point - and only as a "backup" in case I can't post-process the Canon RAW file well enough and there's some weird light situation that requires HDR or some such.

Of course, that requires a couple good lenses, but for 80-95% of stuff, the Canon 18-135 USM is a great lens.

If you get the "kit" refurbished, it's in the $1200 range. (https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/eos-80d-ef-s-18-135mm-f-3-5-5-6-is-usm-kit-refurbished).

IMO, it's been one of the best investments in my adventures - having great photos really makes sharing the story with others, and looking back on it myself, a lot more fun.

Im between the S9+ and the pixel 2 XL lol Those pics did turn out well, we will try the phone first. Then hopefully comes the new wheels..as soon as I find something that will scratch the itch. It never ends.

The guys down here think I need a jeep lol I keep tell them a LT taco will come before that. For how flat and desolate it is here everyone has a jeep on 37s

I think the PhotoSphere is neat but it needs like an HTML5 embeddable viewer or a desktop app or something so more people can see it.

they are so fucking bad. I can't believe people buy them..

Yeah no kidding. Verizon and AT&T are your only choices really far as im concerned for decent coverage. Verizon tends to have better out here.
