    In 2006, when I was shopping for a 4x4, I drove a low mileage '01 T4R with a v6 and an auto.

    Compared to the extracab TRD trucks I had been looking at, the runner was kind of a pig. Certainly not as quick. I can't recall how it was equipped locker wise and no idea on the gear ratio, but at the time I assumed what I was feeling partially due to the weight differences between the two types of vehicles.

    I also remember noting that the Toyota horsepower spec for the v6 in the runner was less than the one in the trucks. 190 vs 180/185 IIRC.

    I'm pretty sure the HP rating was in the paperwork (original sticker, etc.) that came with that vehicle. It also seems like I have seen the same thing elsewhere in other documentation.

    However, it has been a long time and my recollection might be in error.

    did you mean 96? no 2006? because...in 2006 the 4runners had the 4.0l. Which had 235hp at that time. And actually eventually more than the tacoma, 10hp more. Or the sweet 2uzfe v8 :cool:

    Every 3rd gen i've driven is nice, just like a taco yet not. I did not like the wiggle from the 3link though over big bumps. Got bad on grants especially lifted.

    4th gen should be good i think. Especially with the v8. I drove a 5th gen though and it was a total pig. But its the biggest 4runner ever made too..

    Yeah, I know, reading comprehension can be hard... and is a lost art. :luvya:

    Another diff I noticed at the time was seating position. Hard to explain but the seat in the truck seemed to be more upright or higher in relation to the view out the window and over the steering wheel.

    Essentially, all of these things I've mentioned ended up turning me off on the one I drove.

    That does probably help. The wheel base I thought was the same, just the body was shorter?

    Any info on the wheelbase length of the 1st gen single cabs? Seem like a 4 runner is closer to that.

    You go all the way through to union pass when you go? Just looking to see if it dead ends or if the forest service rd at the end is passable.

    I can't say for certain, I want to say one of the times there was a gate. But hey bring a bolt cutter and a spare lock and you're golden.

    looks like the road goes a ways but has a big fence. Goes by a few houses.

    Looks like you could go around the fence pretty easy though. However, the road just disappears after a bit. Also looks like a lot of deadfall across the road.

    The road goes through all the way, both past goose wing and cow creek towards the Darwin ranch, there are closure gates on both though:rolleyes:, both are open to snow machines during the winter though

    A lot of the usfs roads from Jackson to Dubois interconnect in lots of places, but they keep on putting up closure gates because apparently they hate us. They all show up on ORV maps as “Jeep trails.”
