Anything that involves wear and tear on my knees and back I calculate at $75/hr

 

There is slight variation In the floor so it should self level in theory just have a few spots thicker/thinner depending how it plays out. My idea for the drain is to pull the cap and temporarily glue an extension with some kind grease around it so that the epoxy won't stick to it. Remove when dry and replace the cap with some shims to bring it to the new floor height. I'm sure this will get reworked but so far that is how my mind sees it

 

Originally bought knee pads but we ended up just sitting or laying to do it and it was much better

Wasn't my take at all. My guess is he did exploring on his own regularly. This time it but him. Looks like he got stuck in a mud pit.

 

Yup, even the experienced can be taken by surprise. But extra water is always a good idea too

 

Got kicked out of my usual photo spot by some less than accommodating city employees, so I got hasty water tower shots today with my phone instead... oh well. No hope of night shots with the phone I'm afraid, gonna have to wait till I'm in Spokane for that. It's not truck related but I wanted to share...

 

Saw that story yesterday. Having been in that area recently, it is one of the most remote places I've ever been. Our route between Alvord and Hart Mtn took us on roads that were 50 miles from either end and very obviously lightly traveled - quite a hike should something have gone wrong.

Even I (used to exploring alone) got a bit uncomfortable at that point. Here's what I put in the write-up:

More like reinforces don't go alone to such remote places. Especially with a vehicle.

 

What does "with a vehicle" have to do with it? Are you just saying that a vehicle can get you further away more quickly than hiking or a bicycle?

I think it can be OK to go alone as long as you're aware of what you're doing and understand (and are capable) of what it would take to get out (or get to a place where you can get help - phone, PLB, etc). Of course, making sure others know where you are and when to expect to hear from you is also important.

50 miles is a long way - but for me, it's still hikable at the location this guy got lost - easily in 2 days, even in heat. Of course, that's not to say it would be the same for everyone - clearly it wasn't for this guy, who made it 14 miles in 4 days.

Now, if it were 100 miles...then ya, I'm with you.

Oh, and for this guy, it was only 24 miles to Frenchglen, the nearest town...assuming he took the right roads.

 

A bike isn't going to get that stuck and usually if you're on a bike setup or hiking you have a very different plan than most would with a vehicle. Going with a vehicle it is easy to take you're own safety for granted more, we do it every day naturally considering it's basically the most dangerous thing people do every single day statistically speaking. But it can lead to taking more risks.

Offroading is the same. It's happened to me numerous times actually "oh just going for a quick ride" or "I've been here before, nothing bad will happen".

And idk about you but doing 25 miles in a day under super hot sun doesn't sound super do able. I'd probably be shooting more for 15 considering the elements generally. That's a floating thing though and will vary with terrian and weather. But the amount of water you'd need to cover 50 miles under the sun a lone would slow you down some I think. Not that I'm keen to find out haha

Still, my point is that a vehicle is a big very complex thing. We break them all the time doing what we do. It's not a matter of if..it's when. No matter how hard we try, just happened to you with the brake thing. Which worked out great as do most situations I'd say. But most situations are way easier to deal with with a second vehicle in the works. Simple as that. That guy wouldn't have had an issue if he'd had a second vehicle. Same with you when you got stuck in the mud in the same area .

Not saying that's the only way to do it. Because it's not. It just can be the smarter choice.

I know I've had moments alone like down at Millard point in the Maze and realized that if would be one hell of a walk to get help if something went wrong. Haha not about to let that wear on me or slow me down. But the thought occurs at times.

 

And that's why I bought one of those InReach devices. Even though it's annoying paying a monthly fee for something I'll probably never use, the one time I need it will pay for itself.

 

Oh, I definitely agree that having a second vehicle makes things easier and safer. And I also agree that you will break down/get stuck with one and not necessarily be able to recover the vehicle to get to safety. But that doesn't mean you can't still get yourself to safety. (or rather, should feel confident that you can)

And in 100 degree heat, hiking takes place in the evening/morning. You'll need less water and make better time.

The bigger problem of course comes when it's not just a truck breakdown, but also an injury. Then you really need a second truck.
