I was thinking about my bed organization on trips. Everything boils down to reaching the front of the bed. I keep my tent low so side Access isn't always the easiest. Think I'm going to make a between the wheel wells width full length bedslide.

Yeah have thought of that for a 6' bed it makes sense. Kind of what Dan is rocking on the cheap with just some plywood haha But works.

Honestly the idea of bobbing the bed for packing ideas...kind of interesting. I really do mean it when i say that Igors bed is WAY easier to pack and nicer to pack than Franks. Everything stays compact and tidy. Plus on a double cab bed the wheel wells go all the way to the front of the bed so there is not pocket in front of the wheel. Which sometimes I think I miss as it would be handy for some things. But...rarely do I think that.

Seems a bit extreme to bob a bed for that. But...then again..

Really? We used to do it in Wyo for raccoons.

The bumper isn't just storage in bulk though, it's also a means of organization, I think trying to cram his tire upright in the bed would suck, plus doesn't he use it as a table or something too. I never use the whole 6ft bed either, but I don't particularly want to have certain things that are awkward and heavy in my way just because the space is there.

He can't put it under the bed because of the cross member he added for the rear shock relocation.

Otherwise I have no doubt he would have by now.

So it's still an issue. Right behind the cab is about the only option that makes sense in the bed and push the tent back.

    Ah gotcha.

Yeah that's the only real solution for getting rid of the bumper that could work.

Be hard to give up the bed side protection but as we established recently super technical stuff isn't in his mind (yet :p ) but that's really the only major downside. Other than ease of access/organization stuff.

It's something to think about for sure. Not sure I love the idea of pushing the tent that far back, or having the tire vertical behind the cab, but there are obviously trade-offs with everything. I've added this one to my list of possibilities. Keep the ideas coming.

He does a five tire rotation I think, probably saving him some cash in tires given the amount of miles he puts on them with trips nowadays, I doubt he wants to give that up.

FWIW, I just save weight by not carrying crap I don't need. I wouldn't change how my truck is armored to save some weight, sooner or later that'll bite you in the ass for more than it's worth in weight savings. I'm not saying to armor heavy, I'm just getting at not getting rid of what you have currently in the name of cutting weight. If it were a fresh build then maybe lighter options to begin with would be worth it but doing it after the money has been spent seems like a waste of time and good products.

LOL, says the guy who sold a Tacoma because his LC was going to be enough. :boink: :p :luvya:

I totally hear what you're saying though.

If I'm being honest, some of the weight savings ideas I'm having (like bobbing the bed) are just part of what happens to all of us - finding ways to keep moding, even when it's not necessary. I mean, it seems like it might be kinda fun, it'd be a little different, and it would have some minor side benefits (the biggest for me, I think would actually be parking in the garage - so not even weight savings).

Because really, while the truck is heavy, I don't ever really notice that on the trail anyway since I'm Mr. TurbSlowDB.

Five tire rotations are the best! Highly recommend. For me, I feel like it gives me the freedom to try any new tire I want to try when I buy new tires - because I don't have to worry that my spare is some weird one-off (different diameter, etc.). Will make it "easier" to go to 35's, though I never plan to do so.

    Another option is..well...different armor.

I know Aluminum has it's own positives and negatives. But building new armor all around can help. Bob shaved 400-450lbs by switching to Aluminum skids and a rear bumper and front bumper. Was all custom though so not a cheap option by any means.

The Bud Built Aluminum full skid set weighs only 10lbs more then the stock skids for instance. I've been considering this a lot.

Certainly going through gear can shave a lot. Brett had good point about why bother packing a lot of shit when you can likely just go to town and get the parts and go back. Of course from our own experiences we have had we know that carrying parts/tools can really save something in the moment. And of course location is important with this too(Brett coming from wheeling not that far generally from his home vs 1500 miles away). Still being more proactive in this regard could help. Packing for the trip really specifically. I dont really have time for that..but Dan has all the time in the world :p

Really whats the goal Dan? 200lbs? 1000lbs??

We know you can be under 5000lbs for a trip. Both Ben and Zane have proved this at one point or another. But what do you actually expect to achieve?

Being heavy isn't as big a concern when your vehicle is designed to be heavy. Weight has never been a concern for me anyway though, remember 4800lbs :p

Wanna figure out how a 6tire rotation works, cause that's how many 35s I got.
