    This. It's a 20 year old truck.

Pop as much of the dent out as you can. Get some color matched rattle can and touch it up so it doesn't rust. Buy a bumper with insurance money and still have some left over.

I sort of get not wanting a huge dent though. That's part of the reason I didn't want to keep that grey truck anymore. It was the best driving truck I've ever owned. I loved Wheeling it. But it fucking looked ugly as shit, so I didn't want to look at it anymore. It really killed my drive to make it any better. That said this really isn't that bad of a dent. those cheap shops up on highway 99 that I mentioned will get it looking just fine four-way under the cost of whatever fancy shop 4 modern cars that he went to

    Yep.

I can understand that. To a point. In your case...it was a rig. It doesn't need to look perfect just perform. And really, I never noticed it hardly on your truck anyways. The fun factor far outweighed the looks.

It was a rig, but I like my stuff to show the effort and time I put in. That thing looked like garbage even with the time and money invested. At least in my eyes. So it needed to go, it depressed me coming from my nice looking green truck to that pile. So I never really did anything to improve it like I did on the green truck. I never went back to touch up armor, never cleaned up my wiring. Never repainted frame bits. I just let it wither until I couldn't stand it existing near me anymore. Because I knew even if I put the time in doing all that stuff, the body was still a crappy tin can that was beat up. That my point of view anyway. Once you let it slip in looks it's a slippery slope to just letting it be trash. I have to be able to be proud of it to like it. Part of the reason I don't really post pics of my grey truck and I removed it from my sig.

I tried that, it doesnt work for me. I have two other nice vehicles and that one was dragging me down still. It being gone set me free again, though I didn't see doing the Tacoma thing again. At least I've got a nice truck this time to do it with.

I won't let having a nice rig stop me from having fun with it. But this time if I do crash it I'll have the forethought to either fix the visuals or sell it before I waste time with it. I really threw myself off track for two years with that truck, I'm a human with regrets and that thing is one of them.

Someone explain to me how insurance works, since I've never dealt with it. As in - they offer me some amount to fix it and then I just take the money and go? Or, they say "total loss, here's your <value>," and then I have to buy it back from them and go fix it with whatever is left over (and presumably a salvage title)?

And yeah, Zane, if you have a recommended place from your Dad, shoot it to me in PM or whatever.

Second part. They will total it, pay you and then you can buy it back with a salvage title. Believe you have the option of not taking anything from them and the title will remain as is.

The best case would have been to not call them at all. But too late for that. Salvage title time! It'll be the Frankenstein version of a 4runner, even the right color! Haha

Don't forget (and don't let your insurance carrier forget), all the work you've done to the truck has increased its value by that amount - i.e. anything you've spent on the truck and have receipts for should be factored into the value they assess. So if they say it's worth $5k and you've got $1500 worth of receipts for recent work done, it's now worth $6500.

To my knowledge, that's not how most insurance carriers handle aftermarket add ons.

I should have been more specific, I didn't mean aftermarket modifications. Work done like maintenance, repairs, etc.

I had an old Buick that got totaled, but I had just had the 100k mile tuneup done with all OEM parts, and had the receipts for it to the tune of about $500. It was added to the vehicle's assessed value when the insurance carrier paid out.

Interesting. I figured that all didn't matter. Is it just parts (since I'm all the labor)?

Edit: nevermind, I should have read the rest of the thread before hitting Quote.

Yeah I suppose it would be. I'm sure you'll have to do some convincing, especially since there isn't any paperwork from a shop sawing that the parts went to that truck, but all the ball joint replacement, timing belt, brake work, etc. that you've done should count.

Got a little more work done today. New strike plates and LCAs are installed and the steering rack is reconnected.

Damn you really did put a dent in the old strike plate with the bumpstop bolt. Somehow I think bumpstopguy's intent was to have the front bump completely stop travel before that happens.

That was the passenger side. Pretty sure that happened coming off the trail where that coil bucket failed.

That was a long, steep and rough downhill. With the coilover removed, all the weight was on that corner bump. I am sure the bolt that holds the bumpstop to the LCA is deformed too from all that pounding. And we know that the bump was not striking the plate squarely. Now it won't have that problem.
