You can do it backwards. I do it all the time.

You need two screw drivers is all. One needs to be long and thin. Use it to lift the catch. Second one to spin the star.

You can do it, but it's a pain in the dick.

I got good at it when I had the issue of my star wheel constantly over adjusting.

honestly sounds like you just aren't adjusting the cable right in the right places maybe.

The parking brake handle has a tab on it that engages the switch and turns off the light, correct? Shouldn't be affected by the position of the cable. I would release the brake, then tighten the cable and bell crank as much as possible, as long as it doesn't increase the drag in the drum. I think the FSM calls out that only 5 or 6 clicks of the parking brake handle should fully engage the brakes.

What about the adjustment at the drums themselves?

Seems like that is the first thing that needs to get fixed then? If the cable has slack in it when the parking brake is released, hard to imagine it would apply proper tension when fully engaged.

When my brake doesn't hold ill drive in reverse and pull it a few times and that seems to tighten it up enough.

sounds like you have correct tension on the axle line via the drum adjusters so never mind.

could just be a gummed up front cable then.

LOL you haven't seen some of the things in my build. I'm pretty sure people have been adjusting them this way since the 80's.

It's actually not the way they're meant to adjust.

Just take a look at how the starwheel and ratchet work. They adjust when you pull the ebrake cable enough. Doing it while moving doesn't make a difference.

I'd say so. It was applicable on some vehicles at some point in time, but not on our trucks.

They only adjust by pulling the ebrake/the bellcrank moving enough to ratchet the star wheel. Next time you have the drum off, pull the bellcrank by hand and watch how it ratchets.

So, we're still out exploring, but found some cell service and I figured I might as well check in. Was not normal in the Mojave on this trip!

You're right in line with me at those speeds and on that route, it seems like. Very cool to hear.

Yah, we knew it was going to be freezing - temps projected were between 24-51F for the entire trip (perfect for you Monte - short sleeves, even, hahahaha), but we had no idea how much snow would get dumped the day after Christmas... I'd thought it would be rain - so we'd planned accordingly, to arrive the evening of the 26th, after the rain, expecting to just go about our normal adventuring.

    Nope!

Still a great time though, and eventually got to most of what we'd planned.
