this year has been sort of mildish here. Certainly have had our storms. But maybe Im just scared from 3 years ago when it was a damn 1-2' blizzard every freaking week for 5 months straight haha

Plenty of snow this year and lots of ice on the roads. Id be fine in a car except for the last 4 miles of my commute don't get plowed often for days. So can get sketchy. Especially if the wind picks up and the drifts form. I keep chains in the DD because of it. Thankfully haven't needed them...yet.

Certainly done the worst winter driving of my life thought since working here.

Well that would explain a few things...

 

I didn't see it until I saw the pics. It may just be lens barrel distortion but seems unlikely. Probably need to put a straight edge on that main tube to be sure. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow.

 

Yeah, given that your swingout used to be straight and now...not so much, I'd say that's a prime culprit.

Pulling the swingout is a temporary thing. Taking it off will make it way easier to take the bed off , plus I've needed to redo the bearings in the spindle for a while.

 

If the tube is bent, not sure what can be done about it.

 

It's that open plate design, just doesn't have the moment capacity or torsional rigidity of a closed tube shape. Would need some pretty extensive surgery to straighten the bumper.

 

Dual swingout is the way to go.


And how close is that to the body normally? Wondering how much it moved to cause that dent under the taillight.

 

Going to redo the rear suspension. New longer shocks and a new leaf pack.

I don't think the spindle on the bumper was meant to be used as an anal probe...

 

What would you say about drilling some holes through the bumper face and bolting it down on a known flat surface, heating it, welding in close off plates, and then unbolting it after it has cooled. That's probably what we'd do at work, actually we do it a lot with bent stock, sometimes cooling naturally and sometimes with just a tiny bit of heat and a quick quench. Then afterward it would just be a matter of welding the holes closed.

 

That could work, you would need to reinforce it afterwards as the steel has already yielded.

 

I don't think you could do that as there isn't a lot of room there. Might be able too but would be like 1" or so from the plate to box it in before you'd hit the bed.
