I have come to the conclusion that turbo might be onto something, but 62 mph is just a bit slo for me. Especially in Idaho where the speed limit is 80. Maintaining 62 mph is good way to get run over. Plus I hate being passed by semis who are doing 65.

So my new freeway/interstate/divided highway cruising speed is 65-68 mph. My truck seems to like it. And I actually got 18 mpg (one tank) between Seattle and Cheney the other day. don't tell anyone, but there was a definite tail wind when this happened

 

glad we all share the same plight. even my little thing can cruise riiiiiight at 65-68. maybe 70 if its flat. but we go pretty high in the power band pretty often to stay there.

the tacoma will now do highway speed just dandy at 1700rpms sitting on a trailer behind the dodge lol

 

I've never valued my time very high. These days, it's lower than ever.

 

I count the drive as a part of the adventure, not wasted time. That lets me take the 'scenic 'routes as well as intermediate stops. Being retired allows that.

No cruise, so on Interstate I try to maintain 70 but mostly it's 70 +/- 5.

Frank...okay 70 is good but that's cause at 80 I'd get like 10mpg maybe haha barely get 180 a tank as it is.

 

That was the point I was trying to make. At 70 and higher, the inefficiencies start to build. It isn't so much about the cost of fuel but more about the long term abuse I am unnecessarily putting on the drive train. And lord knows my ego doesn't need it.

The truck really does run the best at 65-68. Above that it seems to fight against itself. Sure, its capable of doing the 80, but I'm just not seeing the need to do that.

ALSO @Speedytech7 new BMW is fuckin sweet, although once we rolled the windows down and they saw the goobers driving it they stopped caring if we were single and successful.

Why do you suppose fuel mileage drops as the aerodynamic load increases?

I'm a bed off fan because its easier to work on the tank and ensure everything is put back right. Only takes 30 mins to pull the bed even with the tent on anyhow.

 

Sounds like you already have the tools for that... you can pull the tank but its annoying, not hard, just fiddly. Not a lot of room to reconnect things. I'm a fan of the hoist or engine crane method, but a couple of randos from the next house over work too.

Using the engine hoist method can be a one person job. Just make sure not to drop it.

 

The endless aftermarket support I won't have, but 380hp and a 7 speed DCT in a 3100lb car that makes Fukushima Faster Fan noises and sounds like a high revving cummins is neato. Oh and Josh can attest to this, at the push of a button you can make the car sound like it has indigestion.

 

I don't even know where to start with this, honestly. If you plan to "always" be making more money - i.e. working - then you're doing it wrong. I preferred to rush through work, so I'd have more time to drive around slowly.
