troll the thread to see if anyone is paying attention?

 

Nah, no one to troll here really. I went around my frame with a ball peen and found a soft spot. Just the one and it's only 2"x2" and contained currently. It's right where the frame kicks up by the leaf hanger and also where the boxing ends, probably been collecting water and salt forever since this was ski truck for the last dude. So I'm gonna go full overkill and cap the whole section with one of those repair panels and then blast the inner frame with the eastwood coating.

 

That sucks but sounds like you may have found it in time to save it.

What are the repair panels you speak of?

 

They're those Safe-T-Cap things. They're seriously overkill for what I'm repairing. I could weld in a C piece over 6" and be good. They only need 1" of savable frame for their kit, I don't think I'd trust anything that had rotted that much but they seem to think it can be done. Mine is like 95% good haha. It's always savable though, if I get into it and its way worse than expected (not likely by the tone of my hammer hits) then I make a new back half of the frame. I've got a heated shop space to work in. I've got all winter if it's that bad, truck gets put away since it's on MTs anyway. But realistically I think I'll have it done next Sunday evening

Did not realize your garage is heated. Makes sense though.

Yeah that's the one, my only soft spot is just in front of the leaf hanger on the bottom so 30" of extra metal is probably beyond overkill. I didn't punch through the frame, but I probably could with my tack hammer. I bought both sides, might as well do em together. Just gonna pull the bed and have at it. She should be good after that, gonna strip and paint the thing too on my buddy's 4 post lift. I should clarify, it's his shop that's heated. Mine is too if I put the heater in it, gets to 65 in an hour or so. But I wanted more room to work on this project since I have to pull so much off.

 

Bummer. Should probably check mine.

 

As long as you wash it off once a week during salty season, it's probably not an issue. I caught this before it actually became an issue thankfully.

 

well can't do that here a lot..haha too cold.

And never did it enough in St Louis which is the real concern.


The biggest bummer is the carwash in town shut down. So now I have to drive 18 miles to the nearest car wash..

 

Could let it rot an build a better frame, the toyota one is chintzy anyway haha

Which ryobi pressure washer did you get, I've been thinking an electric one would be nice. I thoroughly despise using the loud ass one my neighbor has, though he's been very kind to let me use it.

 

Why? So they can freeze in there? haha no heat in the garage man.

Also due the unique way they have the streets here..the trucks park on gravel on in front of the house. Would become a mess. They don't drain very well.

Honestly probably end up doing it at work. I think they have a pressure washer at the shop. still 24 miles away from home haha so wash it..then instant dirty.

 

well they don't salt the roads here THAT much. Certainly never in town.

 

They spray some here. Kind of depends. But after a certain point it's just plowing.

Think they spray the chloride shit too.

No driveway so no problem here haha grant at some point I'll ha e one that'll be anywhere from 100 yards to a mile long..so that'll suck.

 

Its been a while.... Looking to buy some new tires for my old 87 Yota. 31/10.50R15.... Looking at the Kuhmo MT51 but want Something that will handle mud really well, and snow fairly well. Mostly use this pickup as a farm pickup to check pivots, service equipment and fetch parts. She finally hit 200k this summer

 

I run the Cooper M/S tire with studs. You can get them without studs though. Pretty much made for that.

Otherwise the Goodyear Duratrac would be a solid choice.

 

Yeah i run duratracs on my duramax and taco, and Kanati trail hogs on the cummins. I think that Cooper M/S is overkill for ice control for this particular rig. It doesnt see much pavement.

 

I've read good review of people in canada running them year round.

But dratracs are about as aggressive as you can get that still behaves in the snow nicely.

Cooper maxxes are...meh. Okay. Not great in mud. Not great in snow. But ok.
