My hope is that part of what we're seeing this year is an anomaly. People have a lot more "not in the office" time right now, and can't go to bars, sporting events, etc. with the little time they aren't at work. Going "outside" suddenly seems like a good idea, and causes places to become overrun.

Hopefully as things get back to normal, we'll see a decrease in traffic at some of these places - at least the tier 2+ ones. Things that are "on the road" like Horseshoe Bend, well, they will get traffic forever. Similar to places like Yosemite and Grand Canyon.

Anyway, that's my vote that humans aren't getting "less lazy," and anything that requires research and planning to get to is (still) going to be reasonably unpopulated in the years to come.

Yeah as you and I have found from personal experience people come looking for the easy way out all the time.

So it likely is a bit of an anomaly for this year but even before this year traffic was increasing a lot.

I think a lot of business and people are waking up and seeing that you don't need to "go" to work for 8hrs to get 4hrs worth of work done. I don't think america will ever be staffed in person as much as pre COVID.

that would be nice. But I don't really see that happening, not very fast anyways.

Would be great if they realized that though.

Maybe not in MT haha, but for things other than retail, office jobs of all types are just working from home, hell even news casters are here. It costs less to have people staffed remotely anyways. This was just the impetus to make it a reality going forward

    I'll take that bet.

    Here's why:
    • Scenario 1: Mary and Frank both work for some tech company - on the computer most of the day, etc. Their employer says, "you can work from anywhere," when COVID is over. Mary is excited to get back into the office - she goes in and does the good work she's always done. Frank keeps working from home - he likes being with his family more, flexible hours, all that. Performance reviews come around; the company says that no one is penalized for working from home. In the end, Mary is just a better worker (even when she works from home) and gets a better review than Frank. On the surface, the easiest thing for Frank to see is that Mary was in the office and he wasn't. Suddenly, he's having a discussion with his spouse about going back into the office because he'll be more visible and get better performance reviews. (...even if he won't really, or if the company tries to remove that bias.)
    • Scenario 2: People are actually sick of being home with their spouse and kids all the time. The office was a good place to escape that.
It's like a lot of other things that people around me have said will "never be the same" because of covid. And yet, all of these things are opened back up, and good-ole-Americans are "enjoying" them:
    • hotels - staying in the same room as someone else; shared AC system; etc.
    • buffets - seriously, people are eating in buffets again NOW (!?)
    • spas - let's all go get naked together.
    • cruises - WAIT, WHAT? A buffet hotel when cases are spiking worldwide? Why, yes please.
Seriously, in a few years, it will be business as usual. People want it now so much that we're seeing the highest level of cases ever, even when we know how to prevent them.

yeah idk. We will see. I know we are talking about 3 days a week on site and stuff like that for my people. But mainly just to allow people somewhere else to live since it is so damn remote here people want the job but don't want to move to..well nowhere haha

But yeah, will see how it plays out in total. I know there is lots of evidence to doing just a 4 day work week even of just 6-8 hour days see a large jump in productivity.

I promise I read the whole thing, but I like this definition and idea for a business in Texas. That and I'm ultimately disinterested in what happens in the world currently and going forward, I'm just stating a trend I'm seeing a massive shift toward. Here in ID, where everyone is actively denying the issue as more bodies walk themselves onto the pyre, there are still folks pulling their kids out of fulltime attendance (which is offered here in-person without masks) and going to virtual learning which we now offer.

god damn reading that was miserable.
So glad I never have had to consider performance reviews as motivation lol. Working 3 twelves is gods gift to the working man. But I can say I was jealous when everyone got to go sit on their ass at home and I had to go in twice as much because I’m a nurse in a pandemic lol.

I prefer working from the office. :notsure:

Maybe if I had my own, nice, private office at home, but the makeshift WFH setup is a PITA.

Shit I way prefer working at the office. But then again I can't afford to build a full studio in my house hahaha

Although I do have one as I wasn't allowed at ours for a few months. Man did I miss having a treated room to work in. I did enjoy being home though. But I also like going to work just..to go to work.

I have truly enjoyed working from home. Today is actually the first day since March that I have really wanted a space for myself instead of working off the kitchen table. So I went up to our loft where we have a desk. Not the same as an office but the small change in the environment is nice.

I do stress more at times because it feels like my productivity has decreased. I just remind myself that I am accomplishing the same amount of work, still meeting deadlines and still meeting the expectations of my supervisor/coworkers.

I love not commuting and being with the dogs all day. I start work at 6 am and end at 2:30 most days. That’s extra sleep and an additional 30 minutes of light at night (game changer in the winter). I really look forward to playing fetch with the dogs at lunch too.

I don’t plan on returning to the office full time unless they force me. When we return to normal I would like to go in 2 times a week and whenever I have meetings.

Until I can have this in house:

I will still come to the "office" hahaha

I mean my home setup isn't terrible, but I needs a lot of work. Still being in a rental doesn't help.

But home is nice. I still try and stay home once a week for an album editing day where I can stay with the dog and just do some editing. Which is nice as I usually have less interruptions.

Your situation is certainly different. My specialized equipment is a broom stick, wading boots and clipboard . I wouldn’t expect an employee in your situation to build an office at home.

My office is easy to recreate at home. I wish I would just go get my computer monitors from my office but I keep thinking I’ll be back next month. It can be really frustrating to work in GIS on a small laptop screen. And it’s easier to write reports when you can have a few documents open at the same time.

Funny how something so simple can change your day. Gotta say, I feel way better about leaving the dogs home if I do go to the office though. The dogs literally sleep alllllll day. I just periodically wake them up for my own satisfaction.

Yeah tricky for sure. I mean I do have a home studio. It's just not...well that haha And is built for a different purpose. I can do a lot of work on headphones but that get's tiring. And I do not like mastering at home without the big speakers and tuned room its just not reliable.

I can understand the multi monitor thing. Especially with a laptop. You have a TV? could plug into that if you wanted. Might not be idea though.

I did like when I was home that I just went outside a lot more. Sat in the front yard with the dog. Went to the park. Just going out in the yard for a minute. Whatever. At the office. I don't hardly see outside and man it is KILLER outside my "office". But I just never go out there and the window I have is placed in a way I can't see anything. So can agree with that part of being home.

One downside was I found I worked more throughout the day though. Like a 12 hour day had a lot more stops and starts to working but I'd work and rest work and rest ect. So it kind of felt like I was working more? Idk.

Nice. I've seen a lot of variations on the idea using all kinds of stuff like linear actuators and things. It's cool if it works well.
